Through this time, I led the transformation to the Virtual Classroom, which in a first time for the College, is providing delivery of online education services to thousands of students across the globe. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, I was able to assist the board and the executive team in transforming Maurice Blackburn into a technology enabled firm, as both a competitive advantage and to streamline existing operations.I was responsible for building an IT team and organisation, aligned to the business in support of the business strategy of efficiency, growth and mobility. This included ongoing professional development and mentoring of the team, to both raise the employee engagement while also getting the best out of the team. The strategy was further developed to include a digital transformation plan with the subsequent delivery.

Rio Tinto IS&T is the global IT shared service organisation within the Rio Tinto group, and provides an extensive set of IT services accross the organisation.In this role, I lead the outsourcing and off shoring of the APAC Infrastructure Operations teams which resulted in a significant head count and cost reduction. This highly successful programme was a result of solid planning and stakeholder engagement and communication. I also had responsibility for leading the development of strategic technology outsourcing opportunities (globally), and the Programme Management of a significant IT cost reduction programme, across all geographies. Working at an executive level ensuring governance and support of the resulting change programme.

In this role I was accountable for the Infrastructure/Technology operations, Service Desk and Field Services for Rio Tinto in the APAC region (being the largest region for Rio Tinto) with responsibility for service delivery across 12 countries. The role required the development of a business aligned strategy and plan to support varying business strategies and growth profiles.The role was responsible for in excess of 400 staff (including vendor contractors) spread across a large number of countries supporting in excess of 20,000 users.This role was a key member of the Global Infrastructure organisation and worked very closely in the definition and delivery of global strategies, plans and initiatives.

In this role, I established a Project Management Office (PMO) for Rio Tinto’s global shared services organisation IS&T. Key drivers were to provide full visibility of the investment portfolio and to ensure it is optimised in line with the financial climate and the business strategy of both IS&T and the business units it supports. I defined the PMO business strategy and delivery model for the organisation and delivered this over a short period of time, including the embedding of best practice portfolio, programme and project management practices across the Rio Tinto IS&T organisation.

This role was created to develop an APAC project delivery organisation and model for IS&T to be able to deliver IT projects for all Rio Tinto business units and product groups across the region. I took on a small team in Perth of 24 resources and a Melbourne based team of 6 and in a period of 14 months built the team to 160+ resources across Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, delivering projects valuing in excess of $250M AUD (with a yearly spend of approx. $80M AUD). This role was also required to develop and implement a suite of Prince2 based processes and procedures and the implementation of solid project financial models. I was able to build a trusted delivery organisation leveraging solid industry and vendor relationships across APAC. This resulted in a team of leaders with a strong focus on team culture and behaviour which is still in place today.

The Managed Services Centre (MSC) is Unisys’ Information Technology Outsourcing delivery arm and provides a range of IT services including Data Centre Hosting (including Wintel & Midrange Servers, IBM Mainframe), Service Desk, Server Administration, Desktop SOE, Field Services, Database Administration, Network and Security, Change, Configuration and Problem Management, Enterprise Storage, Enterprise System Monitoring, Systems Automation, BCP and Capacity Planning (to name a few).As the MSC Director for WA, I was accountable for the delivery of all services out of the MSC to primarily Financial Services and Mining customers, valued at approximately $80M AUD per annum, covering both Managed Services and significant Project Delivery, provided by approximately 300 staff including an offshore based team.
