Archives Intern
This archives internship was focused on a preliminary study of the University of Lethbridge internal photograph collection from 1978 to 1990. My duties included sorting a large number of photographs, developing and implementing a storage system, including the basis of a cataloging system. Part of the final report involved exploring options for digitizing, cataloging and presenting the photographs for general use by the university community. I was responsible for ordering conservation material, sorting and establishing standards for preservation of the photographs in consultation with the University Archivist, Michael Perry.
Storyteller-At-Large
I participated in a work experience program at the University of Lethbridge, in partnership with the Lethbridge Public Library. In this position, I worked as a storyteller traveling to all of the elementary schools in the Lethbridge area, telling fairy tales to groups ranging in age from Preschool to High School. In this position I learned how to capture the attention of an audience. Furthermore, I learned how to adjust presentations to the audience in order to capture their attention. I learned the importance of activities to break up lengthy presentations and how to use stories to get important concepts across.
Historical Interpreter
For two summers and most of the winter of 2003-2004 I worked for the Remington Carriage Museum in Cardston, Alberta. During this time I was responsible for planning tours for groups ranging from local school groups to visiting historical societies. I planned and implemented 3 day camps for school aged children independently and aided other tour guides with additional day camps. I worked with tour groups from all over the world though interpreters, with children, teenagers and adults of all ages. During the summer it was a fast paced, continually challenging environment. I was required to assimilate a large amount of information quickly, and present it in an entertaining and educational manner. I learned the power of stories to teach and impress ideas on people during this employment experience.
