After the initial contract period my responsibilities grew to include the design and ownership of Mencap IT’s technical strategy and I was responsible for gaining sign off of a £1 Million suite of projects that Mencap IT have delivered in FY 2013/2014, this included the scoping, high level design and costing of the projects.• Working with the organisation to understand their IT requirements a £1 million programme of works was developed to fit the organisations requirements. The programme of works included:o The Implementation of a new fully managed WAN (100 MPLS/350 Broadband sites)o A Private Hosted Data Centre & Backup contract, this included management up to and including the VMware layer to reduce risk and increase operational availability with a 100% availability SLA for the core infrastructure over 2 sites. o Development of a standard Windows 7/Office 2013 based Desktopo Implementation of a Citrix 7.1/Windows 2008R2 based shared desktop environment to support 3,000 concurrent userso Migration of user mailboxes from Novell Groupwise to Office 365o Migration of all file services from Novell Netware to Windows server 2012• From Sep 2013 to Feb 2014 I performed the Interim Head of IT role within Mencap, including the management of a team of 27 and a £2.7 million BAU budget.o Ground up reimplementation of ISO 27001. A GAP assessment was performed and all policies where rewritten to ensure that the IT security policies where followed thus ensuring through an external audit that re-certification was achieved.

Initially a 3 month contract, to review and upgrade a legacy non-virtualised infrastructure based on Windows and Oracle Enterprise Linux, to virtualised VMWare with warm-standby DR

Initially a 3 month contract, to design then extended to implement and hand over to support a new very highly available “Virtual Call Center” infrastructure to support upto 500,000 calls per day with 5,000 agents and all related business communications. This was primarily based on a tri-site VMWare 4 High Availabilty design with Netapp Storage and Avaya Voice.

3 month contract to analyse the existing network/server environment and implement a new infrastructure involving VMware and dual sites in Guernsey and Dublin.Implementation of a split layer 2 network infrastructure between Guernsey and Dublin utilising cisco routers/switches/firewalls (all MPLS based), and 10gbit connectivity to new HP blade chassis involving multiple VLANS and subnets additionally implementing the network infrastructure to connect the 2 data centres to allow VMware VMotion between sites and SAN replication (HP/EMC San’s). Servers could then failover transparently between Guernsey/Dublin (design was tested and approved by external auditors).Designing initial setup of the front line Juniper firewalls (Cisco firewalls where used for internal networking) this included utilising BGP on the Juniper firewalls to allow Internet level failover.Analysis of the Exchange/Active Directory environment, then planning and implementing the migration to VMware and Exchange 2010 (additionally the Citrix environment was virtualised utilising virtual servers booted from a single central image)Proof of concept design/implementation of ADFS 2/SAML to Google Applications.

Employed by the Business Services and Projects department of the University whose primary goal is to build, maintain and support the Business Systems that support the Universities functions from the central finance system, central student system, Alumni management & support system to various Oracle databases (on AIX/RedHat) and Windows/Linux servers. I was also the primary Microsoft technologies consultant. My daily duties where split between 40% technical architecture/design (utilising TOGAF), 20% systems support (Network/Windows/Redhat/AIX/Oracle), 20% staff/project management and 20% research/liaison with other university departments/colleges.Evaluation, Design and Implementation of a federated single sign on solution to allow integration of the Student System and Oracle Ebusiness Suite into the universities federated identity environment and to Live.com/google.com. This was accomplished using a mixture of Oracle Federation, SAML (WS-Fed), Windows ADFS V2 (Geneva), X.509 Certificates, Kerberos Realms and Microsoft Forefront Unified Access Gateway. Also, existing Apache/IIS based services where re-designed to support the federated web single sign on environment.

Working on the Reuters transformation project within the data centre network, security and server project stream (60,000 seat, 5,000+ server global infrastructure implementation).

I was offered a permanent position following the contract work that I had performed with Conoco. The team’s remit was expanded to include 4 sites (including a large oil refinery in Humberside) with some 15 other smaller offices, including 600 petrol stations based in 5 countries. Tasks included management of servers, desktop build standardisation, monitoring of communications equipment and development of systems due to business requirements.Member of design team for a companywide (More than 50,000 seats) Common Operating Environment based on Windows 2000 Professional and Advanced Server, specialising in SMS, Server based technologies, WAN/LAN expected impact and Active Directory design. Worked closely with team members from across the globe, with main design team based in the USA.I implemented and project managed an implementation of a Cisco VPN 3000 concentrator into the Stockholm office to support their remote users in all 4 Scandinavian countries, also I re-designed the security around a new extranet in Stockholm that supports 700,000 users, this included project management and budgeting (£1 million project), re-evaluating existing plans and justification of the project at a high level to the business managers.Re-designed and project managed the implementation of the entire network in Scandinavia involving 4 offices and 200 petrol stations, during this time I practised my Cisco/TCP/IP/VPN/X.25 (including XOT) skills and due to the project the Scandinavian office still making significant cost savings (£2.5 million project).Assisted in budgeting the costs of the team and the cost of implementation of the Common Desktop Environment within the business unit.
