Dr. Bria Carter earned a Ph.D in Learning and Developmental Sciences from Indiana University, where she focused her dissertation research on examining how preservice teachers appropriated Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy as tools to confront and dismantle systemic racism and ableism within educational contexts. Prior to working for Digital Promise, Bria taught preservice teachers through Indiana University courses centering educational psychology, urban education and special education methods. For several years she conducted research within a variety of contexts including the Center for Research on Learning & Technology and an assistive technology laboratory within the I.U. School of Education. Bria has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Child Advocates Inc. and Kids’ Voice of Indiana. Bria currently supports equity-oriented research activities related to adult education, career training, and digital skills support, with a focus on historically and systematically excluded populations. In her spare time Dr. Carter advocates for accessible learning environments through educational consulting, and she enjoys photography, videography, traveling, and spending time with family.
