Sr. Mech Engineer
In a small product development firm one wears many hats based on the needs of a project and the needs of the company, but always with a positive focus for the business outcome for all stakeholders. My primary role at Brooks Stevens is that of a Sr Mechanical Engineer, but this has taken the form of various functions necessary for the team, the project, and the company to succeed. For client centric projects, I have served in such roles as:- Technical Lead- Sr. Mechanical Engineer- Sr. Project Engineer-Test EngineerFor the internal business success of Brooks Stevens I have served in such roles as:- IT Management- CAD / PDM Administration- Shop Manager- Facility Relocation
Technical Project Lead
In the Technical Lead role, I am responsible for ensuring that multiple internal and external resources are working towards a feasible technical solution that also serves the positive business outcome of both the project and business merits.I have served as the integration eye to ensure that the multiple resources working on the diverse portions, each with their own array or requirements which often conflict with other portions of a project are aware of the efforts of other resources and project portions so that all resources work towards a common project finalization. A Technical Lead is just one leg of a project core leadership team. Collectively we review the timelines and budgets consumed against the remaining work remaining while negotiating a balance between technical factors, and branding/styling factors. Incorporating multiple design management processes and tools make it possible to not just know where a project is, but that the next planned step is actually the next right step to best serve the project and the desired business outcome. And when it becomes evident that the next step does not serve the project or desired business outcome, to be able to effectively communicate and propose project alternatives early - including not proceeding because identifying when to stop DOES serve to protect the desired business outcome.

Owner / Sr. Project Engineer
As a self employed engineer, I continued my career in product development with executing the emerging kiosk development marketspace for several nationwide brands. These program requirements were not just based on the need to balance brand identity with DFM needs with budget and life cycle functions - but also that of business case in balance with the user experience. These newly emerging design solutions needed to incorporate IT devices, software/app integration with physical implementations. In addition to serving national brand solutions, I also assisted several start-ups justify their business case pitches that launched their businesses. Equally important was assisting some would be startups identify that the business case was unfortunately NOT justified. As a self employed engineer, I also had the responsibility to execute the necessary business functions:- Time Management / tracking- Quoting- Billing / Collections- Benefits- Taxes- Business Valuation
Sr Project Engineer
The 2002 recession gave me the opportunity to help re-invent the business strategy Schmidt Engineering, Inc. Following the economic shift from booming capitol equipment development to marketing enabled sales of existing products focused proved to be a fruitful adaptation. As a result of this strategic repurpose, SEI gained a reputation as a go-to source for some of the first kiosk / POS / POP implementation programs that bridged the gap between the tech / software solutions with physical in-store user interfaces that are now common place in retail environments. A key attribute to the business viability of kiosk was Design for Service (DFS) that made it possible for units to be quickly and affordably maintained. An extension of this marketing industry included supporting several automotive makers with the implementation of consistent, but adaptable branded environments Much of the branded environment was furnishings, but some of it included taller furnishings or overhead items that required the coordination with seismic experts for building code acceptance. One program was a multi-year nationwide roll of an international brand dealership environment. In addition, we were repeatedly enlisted to roll out a popular gaming system with multiple national retail chains. This resulted in us converting their 'theme' stores in several cities nationwide consistent with the established in-store branding into viral destination experiences.Through all of this, we continued to grow the business while growing the young talent that made the projects a success.
Senior Project Engineer
As a Senior Project Engineer at Schmidt Engineering (SEI), I was responsible for the successful execution of many new product development programs through varying economic climates that influenced the business of SEI.Prior to the economic recession of 2002, we executed the designs of off-high construction equipment / vehicles such as skid steers, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPS), and pitman style boom. Designs included the resolutions of integrating sourced components with a new design while maintaining adherence to engineering principals of DFM, DFA (Design for Assembly); stability & structural simulations or evaluations; and standard compliance. Applicable standards were not just domestic, but also international to enable the domestic export of such construction equipment. While implementing such programs, I mentored our young designers and engineers to successful execute these programs while enabling them to begin their careers in the industry. The recession caused a shift in the construction industry away from capitol equipment expenditures causing a shift in the business strategy of SEI to more consumer, marketing and technology based product development.
Project Engineer
I successful executed many product design programs for our clients while being Project Engineer at ADC - which was a New Product Development firm startup at the time.New product designs ranged from on-highway vehicle components; to off-highway consumer applications; to MEWP design; to engine design; to various consumer products.Designs expanded my professional exposure to multiple materials/processes manufacturing, design, and prototyping methods that deepened my ability to apply the right materials / processes to a design to meet a designs requirements, budgets and timelines. Product developments were not just modeling based, but also included the form, fit and functionality of our designs with aspects such as:- ID styling / appeal- DFM- Stability & Structural simulations / evaluations- Standard conformance- Drawings / Documentations- GD&T / Tolerance stackups- Project Organization
Tool Engineer @ Polymer Technologies, Inc.
My primary role at Mac-Lean Fogg was to design and develop shuttle / insert molds to produce automotive style hardware and fasteners. This involved interpreting the provided component designs; negotiate design conflicts with DFM; and prepare 3D tool designs for client approval; support the fabrication to tools; and supported first article runs with PPAP reporting.I also participated in a on-highway vehicle teardown looking for opportunities with part, weight, and assembly in which the team was able identify several future opportunities.
Mold Designer
I replaced my part-time college work with self employment / business to design injection molded tools for local molding houses with the goal of fully funding my cost to complete my BSME at Marquette University College of Engineering.I Interpreted the part designs and incorporated the molders requirements with varying component expectations to design and communicate an organized and effective design that reliably mass produced parts for years with 2D and 3D CAD designs.I attained deep experience with intricate and complex molds including: shut offs; unscrewing molds; mechanical / hydraulic & pneumatic side actions; MUD; Round Mates; and insert molding - all often coordinated with press automation. This mold design experience has given me great insights into DFM of product development used throughout my career.Additionally, as a young self employed designer, I also needed to execute the business functions of being self employed:- Time / expense tracking- Time management- Quoting- Billing- Taxes
Mold Designer
Starting as a high school senior, my primary role was to design and prepare Tools & Molds of contracted injected molded components: - Interpret 2D drawings to build 2D and 3D models of tools designs- Communicate designs with toolmakers and with customers- Organize materials orders - Prepared Costs estimatesMany of these molded components were molded gears / gear trains that needed to perform together that required mold considerations to achieve static and rolling tolerancesWith the molding of helical and worms gears, tooling often needed to included synchronized gear system to eject / unscrew molded componentsGained additional experience fabricating the tools & molds that I just designed and learned valuable insight into the application of Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
