About Brian Alvarez
I am a mentee engaged in a Master’s thesis research project at Mount Sinai School of Biomedical Sciences where we are investigating the causal effect of Mitochondrial function on Alzheimer's Disease risk. Additionally, I am pursuing my Masters of Science in Clinical Research at Mount Sinai where I am trained in the utilization of statistical software, new research methodologies and developing an aptitude in the critical thinking skills necessary to conduct, manage, and interpret the results of clinical trials.I also served as a Teaching Assistant in Biostatistics. I was assigned with leading and guiding students through lab lectures and assignments, offering constructive feedback on assignments and projects, and holding office hours to assist and tutor students in class material. I also assisted the Professor in being a student liaison, helping resolve minor academic or administrative issues, as well as serving as a test proctor during examinations. My experience as a medical assistant has provided me with a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology and the performance of clinical tasks such as phlebotomies and ECGs. This position fostered the development of great patience and empathy that has come from working with children and adults alike, working to address their medical concerns in a timely and organized manner. As a clinical research assistant, I was trained in document management and data collection as well as the conduction of clinical assessments and vital signs collection in accordance with the study protocol. I was required to comprehend study protocols and design source documents in accordance with GCP and GDP requirements. These acquired experiences and skills transferred well into my position as a Clinical Laboratory Research Coordinator. Here I was tasked with collecting, processing, and storing biological specimens, such as blood and urine prior to biohazard shipping. I also maintain laboratory documents in organized matter and order laboratory supplies as inventory demands and provide guidance and instruction to research assistants on lab protocols and lab safety. Moreover, I was responsible for collaborating with clinical research coordinators in the development of laboratory safety policies and procedures, QC documentation and sample collection. In the future, I wish to take my passion for learning and helping others to pursue a medical degree, as I aspire to improve health outcomes and discover new medical interventions with the use of evidence based research, which will improve the lives of patients who need them the most.
