Professor Brian Bates is a research psychologist and an internationally recognised visionary writer, speaker and workshop leader. He is widely known for applying innovative insights to help people achieve creative breakthroughs to issues in personal development, the business environment and the creative arts. He is a scientist who complements scientific knowledge with direct experience of working with some of the world's leading exponents of applied imagination - including tribal medicine people, and some of the world's leading stage and film actors. Former Chair of Psychology and now a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, where he teaches his unique and award-winning course in Shamanic Consciousness, Brian was also a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Business at the University of Brighton. At the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art he pioneered shamanic theatre and trained and directed actors for theatre and film, some of whom became international stars, winners of BAFTA and Laurence Olivier awards, and Academy Award ‘Oscars’. He is the author of scientific articles and six international books, including The Way of the Actor (about what we can learn from the inner dynamics of creative performance in acting and other settings), The Human Face (with John Cleese, about how our inbuilt mechanisms of mind affect our behaviour) and his bestselling novel ‘The Way of Wyrd’, now published in many languages around the world, which shows how courage, deep imagination and an open mind are the keys to wisdom and personal insight, told through the documented experience of a shaman in ancient England.
