Neurophysiologist, educator and philanthropist. Initially educated as a biologist (B.Sc., M.Sc.), I completed training as a chiropractor and had my own clinic in Toronto for six years before taking up a position in research at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, Department of the Autonomic Nervous System. What was intended to be a one or two year hiatus turned into seven years of research under the late Dr. Akio Sato. On Dr. Sato's retirement, I moved to Kyoto University where I continued to conduct research and also teach, first in the school of health sciences and then in the faculty of medicine. During this time, I earned my Ph.D. from RMIT University for studies in the regulation of cardiovascular function. In order to help medical colleagues publish in English, I took an interest in linguistics and language learning. This led to a number of research projects, particularly in the area of corpus linguistics as applied to biomedical and health communications. The findings of research conducted alone and with colleagues spawned a series of online learning modules and classroom based courses. Language acquisition and rhetorical analysis are now major focuses of my research and teaching. This, in turn, has spawned an interest in social network analysis and language analysis as applied to meta-research and research management.For the past 15 years, I have also acted as director and president of Global Peace Network, a Canadian NGO managing health care and development projects, mainly in Tanzania. During this period, I implemented changes in governance and administration, brought in approximately $800,000 in foundation grants, and initiated formal collaborations with local government bodies and NGOs in Tanzania. With Tanzanian and Canadian collaborators, GPN has established the Tanzania Rehabilitation Initiative to bring rehabilitative care to under-serviced communities. Additionally, GPN has led the development and delivery of a post-graduate educational program in rehabilitation for government health care workers. This program involves face-to-face training in clinic, asynchronous learning via our dedicated LMS and tele-mentoring as partners in Project ECHO.
