Software Developer And Consultant
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Design Researcher / Sound Designer
For the World Building Media Lab's collaborative scientific visualization project, World in a Cell, I worked during previz as the primary design researcher and during production as sound designer. This project was undertaken in collaboration with scientists from Ray Steven's lab in the Keck School of Medicine at USC. The aim was to construct a virtual city in VR, governed by the rules and relative scale relationships in the pancreatic beta cell, which would provide scientists an immersive experience and alternative perspective of the functions and interacting systems of the cell. My latest work on this project has been to design and implement procedural audio in VR that sonifies protein data.
Designer / Design Researcher
While contracting at Experimental, I was involved in the research and design of VR experiences and exhibitions for commercial and nonprofit clients. My roles were diverse and included creation of design documents, shaping language for written materials, conducting interviews, creating storyboards, sound design, and modeling "grayboxes" (or 3D mock-ups) for concept and production artists.
Adjunct Professor
For the Fall semester of 2020, I taught World Building Design for Occidental College's Media Arts and Culture Program. World building is a systems-oriented design methodology—often used for creating trans-media story worlds, narrative ecosystems, and immersive open-world games—that focuses on deep research as a way of defining self-consistent and systemic rules for the story world.
Teaching Assistant, Researcher
I was teaching assistant for a number of media arts courses while a PhD candidate in the iMAP division of USC's School of Cinematic Arts. I assisted in such courses as World Building, Tactical Media (Arduino and Processing), Data Visualization, and Intro to Media Production.
Researcher / Sound Designer / Infoviz Design, The Future Of Work — Sundance Residency
During Sundance's Future of Work: LA World Building Residency, I worked as a team researcher to help support the residents with real-world data gathering and visualization as they built their future version of Los Angeles. During the production phase, my role switched to sound designer as I provided soundscapes and audio narratives for the informatics videos and documentary that accompanied the project.
Organizer, Sonic R/Evolutions: Listening In The 21St Century
In Summer and Fall of 2017, fellow iMAP PhD candidate, Juri Hwang and I co-organized a one-day symposium oriented around revolutionary sound technologies, artistic practices, and theories of listening in USC's School of Cinematic Arts. Among our wonderful panel of speakers were media archaeologist, Erkki Huhtamo; sound artist and acoustician, Shane Myrbeck; co-author of The Essential Guide to Game Audio, Scott Looney, and creator of Max/MSP and Pure Data, Miller Puckette.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
I was instructional assistant for Fundamentals of Art and Basic Drawing II from 2009 to 2010 and Instructor of Record for Basic Drawing II for three semesters beginning in 2010.
