Innovator in law, software and the arts. Founder of several "best of breed" enterprises, including Capsticks Solicitors, Datix software. ALARM (now part of the Royal Society of Medicine) and a program to improve patient safety in maternity care. Founded a law firm which grew to become one of the UK's Top 100 and was rated the leading firm in its field of healthcare every year for more than a decade; designed a software system which is presently used by the US Department of Defense, the Veterans' Administration, several Canadian Provinces and a majority of NHS Trusts in the UK; is the architect of a widely used taxonomy for classifying and understanding sub-standard episodes of healthcare; initiated a 15-year programme of research into the causes and extent of birth-asphyxia related cerebral palsy; lectured on risk management at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist for several years; founder of the Association of Litigation and Risk Managers (now part of the Royal Society of Medicine); author of numerous publications in law and patient safety. Presently (2020) undertakes design and construction of an important Japanese garden. Sponsors the Gerson project at the Netherlands Institute for Art Historical Documentation (RKD) and has loaned his collection of 17th century Netherlandish art to the National Gallery, London. Has supported several charities, including the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability; St George's Hospital Medical School; ALARM; CODART; sponsor of several ballets at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Supported a couple of scholarships at the Royal College of Music in memory of Fenella and Harry Hope, an Arkwright scholar at Bishop Wordsworth's and a ballet at the Royal Ballet School.
