For the first eighteen years of my career I had a company (Challis Stairways) that made wooden circular stairs and stair railing components. Challis Stairways was sold to an Ohio firm in the mid nineties.For the next fifteen years I did fine art as a sculptor. My work is found in private collections throughout the US and abroad and in several public venues in Utah. Most notable are the one-and-a half-size monuments of John Stockton and Karl Malone at the Vivint Arena, home of the NBA's Utah Jazz.In early 2012 I began making custom grips for 1911 pistols. My son Nate has worked with me since early 2014 and has become a master gripmaker. Two years ago I developed a new grip bushing system for the 1911 which quickly became recognized as the premier grip mounting system in the industry. I also developed a pair of grip bushing extractors, the best tools of their kind available.
