QED Technologies developed and commercialized an optical polishing technique that was ahead of its time as we were transitioning from the 1990's to the 2000's. This technique utilizes a magneto rheological fluid as the tool that polishes optics in a deterministic and converging process. This technology has opened up the design and fabrication space to include more aspheres and free-form optics effectively changing the world of optics fabrication.As an applications engineer I look forward to merging my interests and experiences in optical testing, fabrication, teaching and technology commercialization to support and benefit QED's current and future customers throughout the worldwide optics community.

Laboratory For Laser Energetics

Execute development projects related to process improvement and manufacturing for thin film coatings. Including Ion Beam Sputtering and e-beam deposition of high laser damage threshold coatings, broadband in-situ optical monitoring, in-situ coating stress measurement. Maintain and update a National Instruments LabView program for process monitoring. As needed perform interferometric optical tests for surface figure, step heights, surface roughness and radius of curvature. Write, debug and distribute LabView software programs for data acquisition, motion control and machine interfacing and control. Utilize Matlab and Mathcad as necessary programming tools for data analysis and theoretical investigations.

Led and managed various R&D projects for process improvement related to optical manufacturing. In particular, chemo-mechanical grinding & polishing, blocking techniques & optical testing and measuring were areas of focus. One project that I managed, resulted in a patent (USPN: 7364493) for a process and machine to manufacture off-axis aspheric optics. Another noteworthy project led to a significant reduction in amplitude of vibrations & wobble during transportation of high value and delicate finished optics. This project was the focus of a Six Sigma Green Belt Project. A third major project resulted in a novel method of blocking an ultra lightweight optic in a reduced strain condition. The amount amount of strain induced by the blocking process was significantly less than the previous process.
