- Specialized in advancement of tracer-based planar laser-induced fluorescence diagnostic for measurements of temperature, pressure, and other flowfield parameters in applications ranging from laboratory turbulent jets to automotive engines.- Versed in a wide range of equipment, including Class IV lasers (excimer, Nd:YAG, dye) and scientific grade cameras (CCD, intensified CCD, high-speed CMOS) and optics (lenses, polarizers, filters).- Designed and constructed unique optical cell experimental setup capable of simultaneous high-temperature and high-pressure conditions with high levels of automation to reduce operator load.- Measured fluorescence quantum yield and absorption cross-section for 3-pentanone tracer (used in engine diagnostics) over a wide range of temperatures and pressures beyond those in previous work.- Developed semi-empirical photophysical model of 3-pentanone fluorescence yield applicable to combustion system diagnostics, especially at high temperature and pressure conditions.- Created novel time-resolved imaging diagnostics using continuous-wave lasers for applications requiring high measurement rates and high sensitivity.- Work resulted in 3 refereed journal publications and a poster presentation at the Gordon Conference for Laser Diagnostics in Combustion.

- Led engineering of mechanical systems and aerodynamic design for solar powered car to be raced in the North American Solar Challenge of 2005. Contributed significant technical expertise and leadership to the car and team that won its class in 2005 after coming in second to last in 2003.- Designed the body shape for the car using computational fluid dynamic modeling for low drag, and used modeling and mockups for human factors design.- Designed robust steel frame chassis that protected driver; chassis and driver were unaffected by three vehicle collisions that occurred during vehicle testing and the race.- Used software modeling in design of aluminum double wishbone suspension, including motion analysis to optimize handling and tire wear, and finite element analysis to verify part strength.- Managed out-sourcing and in-house production of suspension components and vehicle assembly.- Led mechanical systems team responsible for vehicle readiness and repair during the Solar Challenge. Repair innovations include development rapid tire changing technique using air powered tools instead of hand tools allowing for easy wheel removal and uniform nut tightening.- Led rebuild of rear suspension without compromising race position after vehicle collision during event.
