PresidentSenior Connections Of Colorado 2000 - 2003Providing quality healthcare requires taking a holistic approach that addresses an individual’s mental health, as well as their physical condition. When you’re feeling better mentally, you’ll often feel better physically. That was the idea behind Senior Connections, which aimed to deliver mental health counseling services to senior residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Launched in Texas, we expanded the business into Colorado, where we built care teams—board-certified psychologists, licensed professional counselors and licensed clinical social workers—who worked effectively with residents. Having beneficial effects, our data showed that this approach for closing gaps in care both improved patient outcomes and lowered the cost of care due to patients’ improved mental health. While regulatory changes to reimbursement available through Medicare and Medicaid ultimately forced the business to dissolve, this was among the most rewarding things I’ve done. Opened in 1928, the store became a pillar of the Denver community, with one store becoming two, each known for outstanding service and fair pricing. It was in these stores that I learned the critical importance of treating customers like friends and where I saw the need to innovate for the continually evolving marketplace. It is also where I was steeped in the vital role of the small business owner and the value of community. Assuming the role of Vice President was a natural extension of those lessons. Taking on this leadership role, allowed me to help further evolve the business and its long-term success. Updating and implementing business practices delivered rapid growth with the small-town values that my grandfather so passionately championed until the business was sold in 1989.
