After 18 educational (and lucrative) years of bringing information technology to Pacific Newspaper Group I developed the uncomfortable feeling that I was overpaid and under-utilized which, in a struggling industry, does not portend a rosy future. Three announcements in the spring of 2013 together informed my decision to fly the feathered nest to retake command of my destiny. First was a challenge by the mother corporation for each employee to commit to being a part of the solution. Second was a PNG announcement that a part of the solution was well compensated, voluntary staff reduction (potentially followed by poorly compensated, involuntary staff reduction). Thirdly, the union executive developed amnesia regarding the hard negotiated rules of seniority and offered to take direction from the company in that matter.In consideration of the third revelation, I committed whole-heartedly to be a part of the solution by accepting the buy-out offer. I bade farewell to a long and happy phase of my life and to many long held friendships and set off for the next adventure. Three weeks later I became a registered electrical apprentice. I look forward to the next dozen educational (and hopefully lucrative) years.
