About Brian Culp
During my career at Intel Corporation, I developed and supported numerous solutions on Linux, Unix and Windows operating systems. My strategies for problem solving, documentation and solution management made every team I was on more effective. I am committed to a disciplined approach to systems administration, from initial engagement to thorough documentation and support. There are many things that go into a successful IT team well beyond the technical expertise of its members, like understanding what makes each member tick and finding ways for them to be both successful and happy. Some people thrive on coding, others on hardening and troubleshooting and still others in customer engagement. I find great satisfaction in achieving not only my own success, but also in helping other team members to achieve theirs through mentoring and engagement. Collaborative, stable, fulfilled teams with a high degree of trust are the core of a successful IT organization. My roles as Infrastructure and DevOps Storage Engineer provided me the opportunity to take my skills in Linux, performance troubleshooting and critical data protection to the next level. I designed and deployed a cost-effective, storage-agnostic archive solution meeting petabyte-scale requirements. By closely listening to customer needs, I implemented strategies that address complex business requirements they face such as geographically distributed immutable data, security in depth, and self service capabilities via multiple protocols and interfaces. For additional skill descriptions and examples of accomplishments, please refer to my work experience section.

Infrastructure And Devops Engineer (Linux, Windows, Application & Db)
Part of a highly experienced core team of 4 members who was charted to reduce or eliminating customer impacts through process improvements, proactive actions and automated recovery. We created on documentation at all levels, from User to L3. We hardened the automation systems through root cause analysis and automated symptom resolution, resulting in dramatically reduced factory impacts.
Infrastructure And Devops Engineer (Unix/Linux)
L2 Unix supporting implementation, management, oncall and troubleshooting of Factory Linux/Unix infrastructure composing of more than 500 nodes. I was also the Unix site group lead and Virtual Factory (company wide) chair. • OSs included Linux, Solaris, NCR, and HPUX. • Hardware was varied, including dumb terminals, PCs, and mainframes. • Responsibilities included automation of common tasks, creating standardized alerts and responses• Role also included project management varying from year-long projects to by-the-minute downtime management schedules.• Created first of a kind graphical indicators for metrics like uptime, compliance, and QOS.
Factory Automation Support Technician
Support shift lead for high pressure environment. Troubleshooting the entire suite of factory automation hardware and software. Linux, Unix, Windows, and VMS on a variety of hardware types. Perl, Linux shell, and windows scripting.Beyond my daily responsibilities, I developed a few tools to help the IT organization in our mission to provide support to the factory.• Crisis Chronology. I observed that during crisis event phone bridges, communication was all verbal. This resulted in late joiners asking the same questions over and again, conveying technical information like specific error strings was slow, and postmortems lacked detail. This time predated standardized corporate chat systems. I developed a simple web page that allowed authorized users to create "events" with a problem statement as the event name. Participants could then read the entries to date, or add entries. Timestamp and username were automatically added to each entry. The system proved very useful not only during the events, but as a basis for post-mortems and continuous improvement. Primarily written in Perl.• Impact-O-Meter. I observed that we often only learned of system outages or slowness in our manufacturing systems after customers called. I found that on each of our several hundred clients, the logs contained transaction times. I developed code to parse these logs and deliver relevant data to a central location. I then developed code to aggregate the code, creating by-the-minute average and third standard deviation for critical transactions. Finally, I created real-time charting and alerting for those datapoints. Both IT and factory management found the tool hugely useful. I took great pride when one of the upper level folks commented that "this is better than anything on TV!" Primarily written in Perl. Both of these tools proved quite popular, and were quickly adopted by other factories inside of Intel.
Server Administrator
Implementation and maintenance of Windows servers using Novell Netware across 6 branches (Main office & 5 branches). Role included managing server landings, maintaining wan infrastructure, installing and maintaining bank specific software, and fielding user questions.
