Adas Test Platform Engineer
Core Combustion Calibration Engineer
Lead V6 Emissions Calibration Engineer
I was responsible for designing, implementing, and validation of new, and existing emissions calibration strategies on the Diesel V6 engine platform, as well as gathering evidence of legality for all regions of the world the vehicles were to be sold. For this I was required to manage the resource for program, including the requirement to plan the time and workload for the 6-man team of engineers. I started this position in August 2014 as a regular engineer in the V6 emissions team before being promoted to lead engineer middle of 2016.From my time at JLR the skills I feel I have enhanced the most are my planning, with the requirement to design test plans costing into the hundreds of thousands per week, creative problem solving including manipulate ECU strategies to produce the required results, in field repair and modification of test vehicle when on validation trips, and team building, with the requirement to go on test and validation trips of up to a month at a time.
Optical Diagnostic Researcher
My time working at Loughborough University has been performing a fundamental study of the in-cylinder flow of the Diesel engine for the purposes of CFD model validation. To enable this research to take place I had to design and manufacture a research engine test rig that allowed optical access to the combustion chamber. This was performed by the use of a quartz cylinder liner, and Bowditch piston with quartz window to provide full optical access in both the swirl and tumble plane.I would have to record and document my finding and results in the form of journal paper style reports and presentations. This taught me to be accurate yet concise, which is a crucial aspect to any engineering report.I was responsible for the time management and finances of my project, reporting back to my supervisor with my progression, and providing feedback to the sponsoring company every quarter.I was also responsible for leading tutorials and labs for the undergraduate students, teaching me presentation and leadership skills in front of small groups.
Calibration Engineer
During my time at Perkins I was involved in the closing stages of the development of the Tier IV Interim legislationcalibration on the 4 cylinder product, before moving onto the team responsible for finalising the Tier IV finalcalibration. My initial time in the company was uniquely spent running a test cell while continuing to be a member of thecalibration engineering team, providing me with extended knowledge of the practical side of engine testing, makingme the resident expert when I finally fully moved into the engineering department. This led on to me taking on soleresponsibility for the low power 4-cylinder engine project during its final stages. My day to day work involved producing engine maps, and analysing test data to ensure legislation progression for thebase engines. As well as producing customised maps for specific customers, to enhance engine performance at theirunique running conditions, while still adhering to the legislation.I was responsible for the planning and time management of my work, requiring regular updates
Graduate Scheme
I commenced a graduate scheme with Cummins technology before being head hunted to work for Perkins Engines.During my time there I learnt a great deal about how turbo chargers are designed & manufactured and how theyperform. My first placement with Cummins involved dealing with the current products and any design or manufacturing changes. The second placement involved working on future products, in particular trying to improve the efficiency of futureproducts.
Undergraduate Program And Summer Placement
I undertook an undergraduate program at JCB between my second and third year at university. In which time I workedin a number or departments, ranging from design & development of various machines in the JCB range to sales supportwhere I analysed pricing strategies for dealers around the globe.I also went back to work for JCB during the summer break between my third and fourth year. During this placement Iworked on loading shovel development and also within the global warranty department, where I was investigatingdealer warranty claims.
