I continue my research, focusing on the behavioral effects of accounting-related regulations, incentives, and policies. I aim to publish my work in top accounting journals. I teach cost/managerial accounting and accounting ethics. I serve as the assurance of learning coordinator where I facilitate the accounting department's separate AACSB accreditation as well as university-level assessment.

As an assistant professor, I researched how accounting information affects manager and employee behavior. I waived three years of available tenure clock extensions. I taught cost/managerial accounting at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I served as the College of Business and Economics representative at Boise State’s Spanish Welcome. I also served as the accounting department representative on the college scholarship committee, where each year I helped over $100,000 of scholarship awards go to exceptional students.

I have provided business coaching and served in a tax compliance or planning role on a wide variety of issues. Highlights include issues related to cryptocurrency, capital gains and losses, retirement accounts (including qualified pre-retirement withdrawals), HSA accounts, real estate transactions, debt forgiveness from short sales (including on a non-primary residence), gift taxes, estate planning, and pass-through entities (including tax consequences of winding up a business venture).

It was an honor to be mentored by some of the great accounting scholars at Pitt. According to the BYU Accounting Rankings, Pitt ranked #2 worldwide for management accounting research when I entered the program in 2013. I grew significantly from the piercing and critical thought that these scholars brought to just about everything they did. While a student, I participated in dozens of visits and presentations from top accounting scholars, including scholars from Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Emory University, Harvard University, Indiana University, Miami University (OH), Michigan State University, Texas A&M University, University of Arizona, University of California-Davis, University of Chicago, University of Houston, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Kansas, University of Maryland, University of Miami (FL), University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Tennessee, University of Washington, and University of Waterloo. I made several presentations to Pitt faculty and assisted faculty members in a variety of research activities (e.g. data preparation, literature review, conducting field experiments, and conducting experiments in the Pittsburgh Experimental Economics Laboratory). I assisted in the transportation, interviewing, and hospitality of doctoral program applicants, guest presenters, and job applicants. I gained teaching experience by observing classes, being a TA, and teaching courses myself.

Freeport gave me a wide survey of experience in cost and financial accounting at a Fortune 500 company. I maintained project coding for over 500 projects in SAP. I calculated and posted cost allocations. I produced various cost reports, and I assisted in accounting for site assets and capital projects (with book value of over $35.7 million). I analyzed costs in the lead role for a site hydrometallurgy division ($25 million annually), and I served as support cost analyst for the leaching and acid plant divisions ($70.4 million and $41.6 million annually, respectively). I facilitated monthly and quarterly division forecasting and performed month-end and mid-month metal inventory counts (confirming ending inventories of over 3.5 million pounds in total). I prepared and distributed monthly metals statements showing metal production and ending inventory. I assisted in the preparation and presentation of a department's annual budget (over $121.7 million) and prepared accounting training presentations for non-accountants (to improve understanding of management control policies and internal reporting systems). While at Freeport, I simultaneously completed my master's degree and passed the CPA exam. I left Freeport to begin my doctoral education.

This position was classified as an internship, but my duties were largely consistent with a permanent position as a compliance auditor (ADOT was under a hiring freeze on permanent positions at the time). I scrutinized overhead cost assertions on cost-plus-fixed-fee contracts, reviewing contractors for compliance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation.I reviewed (as lead or assisting) over 40 ADOT contracts, totaling more than $110 million. I worked on millions of dollars worth of incurred cost audits (to true-up budgeted reimbursements). I authored a memo for the "Tecom II" ruling (i.e. Geren v. Tecom 2009) to assist in the department’s application of the ruling. I left ADOT to accept a position at Freeport.

I prepared federal and state income tax returns for individuals and entities. I referenced the Internal Revenue Code and relevant rulings, and I was able to research some complex questions, including questions about demutualized stock basis. This position ended at the end of tax season, and I was invited back the following year (I only declined because I was working full-time elsewhere).

I performed cost analysis for cellular phone customers in a retention and sales role, where I regularly met stretch sales goals. I was promoted at my earliest eligibility. I counseled customers as they considered various options and helped de-escalate and retain customers. I left this position to become a full-time student at Arizona State University.

I worked directly with the business owner and learned about general business practices, which impacted me for a long time (for example, he taught me about the four P's of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion). I enjoyed the enjoyable parts of the job and learned to enjoy some of the less enjoyable parts as well. I learned from plenty of mistakes. I helped the owner test out new product lines and made both hard and soft sales. I left this position for a full-time volunteering position.
