  • Ge Aerospace
    Senior/Staff Engineer
    Ge Aerospace Aug 2010 - Jul 2015
    Cincinnati, Oh, Us
I returned to GE Aviation in 2010 and took the role of team leader, low pressure turbine (LPT) for small commercial engines. In this role, I led a team of seven (7) engineers to:1. Certify the LPT of the HF120 Honda turbofan engine, in cooperation with Honda Aeroengines, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Corp. The team overcame numerous mechanical design challenges to successfully certify the LPT and enable the engine program to achieve FAA certification.2. My responsibilities included: overseeing design reviews, module level meetings and reviews, supervision of design activities and results, supervision of component and engine testing, mentoring of junior engineers, presentations to management and Honda personnel, both domestically and overseas. Establishing budgets and schedules and managing program to cost. I received the controlled title "Senior Engineer Low Pressure Turbine Module Design" during this period. In early 2013 I took the role of Systems Engineer, Marine and Industrial Engines, including a fuel efficiency improvement program on LM2500 engines. I led an international program across 5 countries to develop a set of fuel efficiency improvements to reduce fuel burn. I supervised design of the concepts, made decisions regarding the final configuration, presented status to both the company management and to the customer and developed a detailed instrumentationplan for a unique instrumented engine test just prior to program cancellation. I developed cost and schedule as part of the bid and proposal process and teamed with Marketing, Legal and Sales to develop comprehensive proposals to the customer. In the role of M&I Systems Engineer, I also support the LM1600 gas turbine fleet and examined the installed base in the field to improve engine reliability using fracture mechanics and statistical techniques.

  • Johnson & Johnson
    Senior Design Engineer
    Johnson & Johnson Oct 2006 - Aug 2010
    New Brunswick, Nj, Us
As Senior Design Engineer, Harmonic Franchise, I was team leader that introduced a new ACE45 45cm length laparoscopic ultrasonic instrument for use inbariatric patients. This device made typical laparoscopic procedures such as lap cholesystectomy and gastric bypass possible in larger patients. As team leader, I:1. Established design requirements, testing, design methods and schedules2. Directed lab testing, supervised mechanical design and collaborated with external partners such as manufacturing and quality3. Directed animate lab studies to secure FDA 510(k) approval, allowing the device to go to market.4. Performed market research both in-house and with external customers, witnessing two (2) procedures using the new device.5. Discovered and evaluated unique vibratory characteristics of the ACE45 blade and developed university relationships to evaluate and predict thisnondeterministic behavior.I was also senior engineer in the company Harmonic Technology Team, in which I rapidly developed new blade designs using SDRC IDEAS analysisplatform. I made frequent use of rapid prototyping and turned around new designs quickly for lab evaluation. I also developed a use limiting device incooperation with an emerging market team in India to insure safe use of the single-use device in emerging markets who present different cost challenges.
  • General Electric
    Senior/Staff Engineer -- Aviation
    General Electric Oct 1996 - Oct 2006
    Boston, Ma, Us
As both staff and senior design engineer, I accomplished during a ten year time period with GE Aviation:1. Significant cost reduction for the GE90 engine with the first all-composite fan platform (patent # 6,217,283). This work included laminate analysis work in both steady-state and normal modes analyses using ANSYS. I gained my Six Sigma Greenbelt certification during this period and made frequent use of rapid prototyping techniques to speed design development.2. Numerous producibility/reliability improvements for military gas turbine engine hardware were written to address field problems. During this period I also developed a unique method of balancing fan rotor "blisks" ("BLaded dISK" or integral airfoil-rotor structures) and received patent # 6,354,780.3. Development and qualification of fan rotor "blisk" components for a high-thrust engine variant. I led the design team to qualify the fan module, presented status to company upper management and government authorities, both civilian and uniformed. Developed a unique residual stress process to preclude airfoil failure and secured patent # 6,914,215.4. I applied the above techniques to address high stresses in another airfoil application. I presented the benefits of this work at the 45th AIAA SDM Conference in April, 2004 as Davis et al., "Performance of GenIV LSP for Thick Section Airfoil Damage Tolerance". I subsequently also gave this paper at the June, 2005 Aeromat conference in Orlando, FL. I was awarded the controlled title of "Senior Engineer" in fan module design.5. As systems engineer for the F136 engine/F-35 aircraft program, I developed a unique electrical anti-ice system to protect the fan module from environmental icing during flight. Partnering with industry experts, I developed a new windtunnel model to assess potential icing risk zones in the simulated aircraft inlet and to assess feasibility of the new system under simulated icing conditions. I received patents # 8,061,975 and 8,197,196.
  • Rolls-Royce
    Lead Design Engineer At Aadc
    Rolls-Royce Jun 1995 - Oct 1996
    London, England, Gb
At the Allison Advanced Development Company, as the lead design engineer, I delivered complete designs and manufacturing detailed drawings for a newhigh-pressure compressor (HPC) vane/casing layout as part of an advanced compressor design program. This work included the following effort:1. Static and vibratory analysis of static structures2. Advance solid modeling using Unigraphics3. Tolerance stackups to insure successful assembly of many components4. Issuance of detailed manufacturing drawings for hardware procurement5. Presentation of detailed design reviews to upper management and government authorities6. Patent development of a unique seal design. Reference patent # 6,076,835Resultant design and subsequent hardware went to test to demonstrate performance and hardware capabilities.
  • Pratt & Whitney
    Senior Design Engineer
    Pratt & Whitney Jun 1989 - Jun 1995
    East Hartford, Ct, Us
During a 6 year period at Pratt and Whitney, as senior design engineer I performed mechanical design of both fan and high-pressure compressor structuresfor advanced military gas turbine engines. These structures included fan and high-pressure compressor (HPC) airfoils, casings and variable stator vaneactuation systems. I also developed an advanced metal matrix composite airfoil design and laminate system to be coupled with an internal hollow cavity.Among my task and accomplishments are included:1. Design of HPC airfoils and test rig design for an advanced HPC test rig. I made use during this period of early stereolithography (rapid prototyping)techniques to aid in complex design development.2. Advanced composite analytical design and coupon development and manufacture for materials property testing3. Design and testing of HPC airfoils for the F119 engine in support of the F-22 Raptor program.4. Authoring of several technical reports to document the work above.5. Authoring and presentation of numerous briefings to upper management and government authorities.6. Authoring of numerous design changes for both producibility and design enhancement.7. Development and issuance of detailed component manufacturing drawingsMy engineering performance during this period made use of advanced finite element programs such as NASTRAN and ANSYS. These analyses includedsteady-state and normal modes analysis, for both isotropic and anisotropic materials, the latter using laminate property elements.
