Brian Day was born in Liverpool, England and graduated in medicine at the University of Manchester in 1970. He obtained specialist qualifications in both internal medicine and general surgery before moving to Canada, where he completed his orthopaedic training. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Canada and England and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. After further training in Switzerland, he practised in the field of orthopaedic trauma, and introduced some of the minimally invasive techniques for fracture treatment to Canada. He is Associate Professor in orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. He has been a visiting professor and lecturer at many universities and learned societies around the world, and has published over 150 scientific articles and book chapters. In 1984, his collaborative work with biomedical engineers Jim McEwen and Geof Auchinlek resulted in the development of “Arthrobot,” the world’s first surgical robot. He has specialized in the surgical treatment of sports injuries and is a past President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the world’s leading academic society in that field. He has treated many international celebrities and world class athletes. He is the founder, President, and CEO of Cambie Surgeries Corporation, a company that opened the first private hospital of its type in Canada. MacLean’s magazine has described him as “an iconoclast, whose time is now.” Dr. Day is a former President of the Canadian Medical Association. He is the only orthopaedic surgeon in its 148-year history to serve as president. Dr. Day was named to the Globe and Mail’s annual “Power 50,” in sport in 2012. Dr. Day is leading a constitutional challenge against Canadian laws that (uniquely in the world) make it unlawful for patients to use their own resources to bypass long government waiting lists for care.
