My career began with a highly successful Lemonade Stand that made enormous sums of money and created a reputation for being hard working and drinking a lot of lemonade. I wish I could tell you that I am now the largest masher of lemons in the free world but I did not stay in the fruit business. A great experience with semi-pro tennis suggested that I was better suited for business than the life of tennis on the road.The navy allowed me to have the best job in the military which I kept for six years and flew over 1200 missions off of carriers before out- processing to what was called the real world in 1973. In spite of the condition of the country I got a job with the third largest steel maker in the world and did jobs of increasing impact for 18 years.While there, I was the first to covert from the older sales techniques and principles to an aggressive customer focused posture that saw the work increase the sales in my district by four fold at a time when the steel demand was low and many mills were consolodating to avoid shutting down. After returning to corporate in a job that addressed product engineering in the customer's facilities, The hard times were a problem even for our organization. I drew up a plan that would asure survival of the company by heavy cuts and selling part of the company to Kawasaki steel to get the three billion we needed to revise the mills and be the low cost produce. Today the mill where I learned so much produces twice the steel it did in 1980 with half the people. With my work done at the Steel Company, I left and began a consulting company that was focused on improving the application engineering of the customers. The steel company was making better steel and it was time for someone to make it run better in the customer's facilities. After a slow start, the customers began to see that there was a lot they could do to use the full potential of their equipment and plants. Phoenix Consulting became the premier consulting company for Ford Gm And Chrysler for the the next dozen years. We saw the company grow by and average of 35% per year with margins improving every year. In 2000 I sold the organization to the employees and started a new company serving other industries and businesses. While it remains a consulting company, it also explores my continuing background in aviation. More than half of the volume of the company today is in construction and operation of airplanes. We serve a small number of high end clients that are interested in exploring electric propulsion in jet aircraft.
