About Brian Dess
Brian Dess is a research scientist that works for Kalman and Company, Inc. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Iowa working in Dr. Gary Smalls research group in August 2016. His undergraduate studies were conducted at Hope College resulting in a Bachelor in Science. His research involves remote detection of gaseous species and radionuclides in line with the Environmental Protection Agency "ASPECT" program, with a focus on radionuclide detection. This program is aimed at assisting first responders in hazardous chemical/radiological situations where handheld sensors potentially put the responder at risk. By massively enhancing selectivity and sensitivity the first responder can identify threats from a airborne or other stand off platform as long as there is a signal to detect. This research aims to eliminate a existing impractical procedure in favor of one that can give access to building a classifier of nearly any compound easily. This involves extensive and cutting edge detection algorithms that are the result of decades of research in the remote detection field. Tangible advances have been made in designing more sensitive and selective classifiers for the remote detection of these radionuclides both in controlled and preexisting field locations. Dr. Dess firmly believes that his algorithms provide the most sensitive and selective capabilities in the world given successful weak source detections from over 1000 feet away. This is thanks to having realistic data to work with and custom designed algorithm development methodologies.Brian's background is heavy in multiple scientific fields of study. He has a passion for Chemistry, Physics, Computers, and Engineering. He has interned for a Defence Department Agency interested in the threat reduction of chemical, biological, and radiological weaponry, and also a R&D branch of a private engineering firm. He also performed environmental research with a particle accelerator at Hope College. Dr. Dess is devoted to the national defence of the United States.
Listed skills include Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Instrumentation, and 20 others.

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Research Scientist Iv And Liaison To The University Of Iowa At Kalman & Company, Inc.
CurrentPrimary research responsibilities include continuing to build on pattern recognition theories that have previously been demonstrated to significantly improve gamma-ray detection sensitivity and selectivity. Technologies borne from these theories have improved existing systems with future and far-progress projects poised to further expand the effectiveness.
Research Scientist Iii And Liason To The University Of Iowa
Research responsibilities include continuing graduate college research project by supporting the remote detection algorithm development, particularly for radioisotopes. A large scale expansion of the radioisotope detection algorithms has been both in progress and achieved. The number of active classifiers numbers has increased to over nine fully vetted.
Graduate Research Assistant
Focus on research to obtain Doctorate degree. Working for Dr. Gary Small.Projects include, but are not limited to, development of a remote isotope detection methodology. Two isotope classifiers have been successfully developed and tested with one used to develop the method and the second to verify the method will work with all known isotopes in complex.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Teaching undergraduate lab courses. Entails understanding of concept material and execution of labwork that students will need to complete. Labs taught range from simple qualitative analysis to production of Quantum Dots along with undergraduate level conceptual knowledge. Students only have direct contact with TA during lab.Teaching Discussion sections..
Internship
Engineering firm that focused on prototype sensor technologies for parent company Banner Engineering. Worked on troubleshooting and various electrical engineering related tasks throughout paid internship. Helped streamline production process of prototype sensor that led to output increase of several factors.
Internship
Internship with Chemical and Biological division of DTRA involved webpage design, scientific collaboration, and engineering explorations. Coincided with Hope College study abroad program in Washington D.C involving meetings with Congressmen and NGO's.
Hibal Operator/ Research Assistant
Undergraduate research assistant using Hope College HIBAL Tandem Accelerator. Learned operating principals of accelerator and obtained radiation training for research. Identified chemical composition of various substances for research.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
Teaching undergraduate course alongside Dr. Fu at Hope College General Chemistry Lab.
