An Innovator with a passion for solving the hardest problems, I work to bring new technologies to the marketplace from ideation through manufacturing via simple, commercially viable solutions.At C2Sense, I am a co-inventor of Aura™, the enabling technology behind C2Sense's Halo™ diagnostics and AuthenTags™ authentication and sensing lines of business. Hired by the CTO for his Advanced Technology Group, we combined chemistry, material science, optical sensing and computer vision to invent and solidify the Aura’s IP. As the technology matured, I began to lead the Advanced Research Team. The team collaborates with Product Owners and Product Managers to determine and develop the Art-of-the-Possible and commercial proof points. These collaborations have resulted in substantial JDAs, commercial partnerships, and investments. Prior to C2Sense, I was the 9th hire at a newly formed Startup. As the Senior Research Scientist, I lead all technical research and held the additional roles and responsibilities of Team Leader, Laboratory Manager, and Safety Coordinator. I received my Ph.D. in 2016 under Prof. Evgeny Katz at Clarkson University where my thesis focused on developing and fabricating microfluidic “smart” biosensors for medical diagnostic applications that were driven by Boolean logic gates. These modular sensors could be connected to drug delivery systems, release systems and diagnostic systems. Being cross-functional research, it also included work in electrochemistry, material science, nano materials and with other professors such as the late Prof. Vladimir Privman ( Physics ) and Prof. Jan Halamek ( Forensics ). Once the technology transfer was complete and solution based systems into fluidic devices, optimization could occur. This meant that the assays had to be immobilized and fluidic parameters developed.Once complete, the fluidic lab on a chip style systems were attached to different actuation systems. This allowed for signal triggered release (drug delivery), diagnostic readings (In Vitro diagnostics) and electrochemical actuation to be realized. An extensive knowledge of biochemistry, human metabolism, and enzyme cascades allowed these systems to be expanded to include biologically relevant targets (glucose, etc.) and release specific compounds (DNA, RNA, Insulin, Nanoparticles) based on the selected targets. Undergraduate Research AssistantClarkson University Jan 2012 - May 2013Potsdam, Ny, UsI developed biochemical enzymatic assays that used different human metabolites to create complicated diagnostic / biosensing systems based off of human metabolic states. These biosensors had their specific enzymes, cofactors, and substrates chosen so reaction could be controlled depending on how the different combinations of the metabolites were added to the system. By designing and optimizing the different combination and concentration of metabolites, these assays could relate to biologic conditions like liver injury, diabetes, ketosis, lactic acid buildup etc.. When I applied these metabolites in specific patterns, these assays could act like diagnostic biosensors, more specifically, chemical computers that would give their “answers” in the form of binary “YES / NO” chemical responses. Analyzing these binary answers would allow the user to know the specific input combinations by understanding that the logic based answer was related to the input chemicals. This allowed us to know what chemicals were present in the unknown solution much like a biosensor or In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) device would detect a target of interest. I was able to champion / implement new and innovated assays by designing, reviewing / improving the existing enzymatic assays for Biosensing systems / diagnostic systems.I supported these cross-functional research initiatives by connecting the Smart Biosensors to photochemical filters, enzymatic & physical filters and then analyzed and reviewed project data, corrected errors and reported results. I also designed and suggested strategies to improve the chemistry and processes. I lead the data analysis by developing relationships with the Department of Physics to analyze and peer review the data and continuously improve the results.
