About Brian Etherington

I recently graduated from St. Andrew’s College in June 2024 and will be heading off to McGill University in Montreal this fall. I will be a first year student at McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management and will obtain my Bachelor of Commerce degree in June 2028. I am passionate about making an impact and difference in my community. I have demonstrated this through my commitment to Special Olympics, volunteering over 350 hours to lead and support EDI-events. Examples of this includes (1) “Saints Day” an event I developed on my school campus which brought together athletes with an intellectual disability alongside high school students for a day of inclusive activities (30 sec video: https://youtu.be/Zk_TkisTeNo ), (2) As Volunteer Coordinator for motionball, supporting Special Olympic events such as Marathon of Sport and (3) Launching #NoGoodWay on my campus, an antibullying campaign designed to eliminate the use of the R-word (R3tard).I take pride in being a well-rounded individual with a strong academic average (95%) and active participation in many extracurricular activities including sports and clubs that demonstrate my leadership capabilities and teamwork. I was a 3-term Varsity athlete at St. Andrews College, a school that is highly competitive in all areas of sport and renowned for producing and nurturing elite athletes. I am a Varsity athlete in Squash, Tennis and Cross-Country. I was also the Assistant Captain of my York Mills Rangers hockey team. I was humbled to be elected by my teammates to represent them in the locker room and on the ice. Immersion in student life & clubs is a priority to me. Examples of student clubs and councils that I have been involved in during the past 4 years include DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), Andrean Investor Club, Code Culture Club, McEwen Leadership, Robotics, Bagpiping and Outreach Council. For the last three years, I have helped the Outreach Council raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Tire JumpStart program. Specifically, I have taken on official coordinator roles for the 30-hour Famine and monthly Bake Sales. Finally, I am passionate about the study of business and after careful consideration of business programs in North America, i ultimately selected McGill’s Bachelor of Commerce program. I hope to pursue a future career in finance, management consulting and/or small business management and entrepreneurship.I also hope to make a positive impact to the people and community around me, I want to always be considered a force for good.

  • Motionball For Special Olympics
Volunteer Coordinator, Motionball In Support Of Special Olympics
Motionball For Special Olympics Jun 2020 - Sep 2023
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
I have volunteered over 350 hours in support of Motionball for Special Olympics, a national non-profit that empowers young Canadians to be leaders in their communities. Motionball raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics through integrated social and sporting events. Through my experience and commitment to Motionball and Special Olympics, I hope to help eliminate discriminatory practices, promote diversity & inclusion, and advocate for equal opportunities in sports, employment and other aspects of life for those with an intellectual disability. Listed below are two examples of my passion for community giving and aspiration to be a force for good through Motionball and the Special Olympics movement:#NoGoodWay: I launched a #NoGoodWay campaign on my school campus which aims to eliminate the use of the R-word (r3tard) in everyday conversations. This campaign helped to bring awareness to my fellow students to the harmful and isolating effects this discriminatory word has on Canadians with an intellectual disability. Through this campaign I was able to encourage high school students to “take the pledge” to promote positivity and inclusion, and demonstrate that there is #NoGoodWay to use the R-word.Marathon of Sport: Marathon of Sport takes place in 17 cities across Canada and 34 university campuses. It is an event where teams of friends and colleagues participate in a fun-filled day of sport alongside Special Olympics athletes from their community. For many athletes, this event is not just about sport, or staying healthy, but it is also about providing a social network and a sense of belonging.I have volunteered at several Marathon of Sport events since 2020. My responsibilities typically include sport set-up, event coordination (t-shirt distribution, prizing, food stations, etc) and refereeing a sport (e.g., benchball)
