In market and consumer research, it’s quality that matters most. As much as I’ve furthered best practices throughout my career, I know that quality data is the foundation of actionable insights. I am an advocate for quality research, but now more than ever, that is under threat. Quality research demands robust research with real people, not mechanical farms running upwards of 30 surveys simultaneously. Many new panels fail to verify identities, and the outcome cannot be accurate when one person pretends to be three, foreigners pretend to be Australians and bots pretend to be people!Overcoming this threat is a huge challenge but I care deeply about the integrity of research and its power to solve problems. When speaking at conferences and seminars, I champion better questions and better analysis because that’s what drives objective outcomes.I have explored this in several significant research papers over many years - notably nominated for a co-authored best paper at ESOMAR Congress, Barcelona, 2006 "Attitudinal differences: Comparing people who belong to multiple vs. single panels." In 2009 and 2013, jointly awarded ‘best paper’ at the annual AMSRS Conference.With vast experiences across different areas of market and consumer research, I am most excited about ‘research on research’ – about actioning my learnings and leading a great team at QOR in the provision of the best quality online research. In today’s landscape, that means we do things differently.Our respondents have been built over many years. In the early days, this was by invitation only and through key partnerships with Australia Post and MYOB.We are always looking to stay ahead of bots, identify false actors or those undertaking fraudulent activity, and to ensure they are excluded from our surveys. We follow all guidelines and are quality assured under the Australian Market & Social Research Standard ISO 20252.In short, the research we design, collect, and analyse is vetted and verified, giving our insights credibility. Building high integrity online panels is what I’ve done since 1999, but it’s not the only way I’ve advocated for quality over the decades.     Currently on the advisory panel for the UTS Entrepreneurial MBA program, I have previously served on the university’s advisory panel for the Bachelor of Business degree program for a decade; from 2006 to 2017, I acted as an Adjunct Professor in the Business School of the University of Technology Sydney.Having been invited to speak to MBAs many times during my tenure, I have twice presented the Occasional Address to graduating business students. It is exciting being at the forefront of ideation, working with thought-leaders on new and better concepts, and I have also enjoyed the many partnerships that came from my time at UTS.

    ►STW Insights, AMR Interactive, ORU online research unit panel◄After I sold AMR to STW, I was contracted to stay on as a part of the business buy-out. On a day-to-day basis, I was involved with AMR Interactive as the Chief Executive and, separately as Chairman, with ORU, a panel I established in 2000 while at AMR.I directed the provision of services to clients, explored synergies, and oversaw surveys. I also built the client base, crafted initiatives to utilise the panel, reduced time and cost demands, and advised research agencies.Other key roles at this time also include President of AMSRO; Chairman of AMSRO’s Quality Committee; and Australian Representative of ESOMAR.

    I founded and built Australia Market Research (AMR) into, what was at one point, the tenth-largest Australian research company. Starting in the MLC building, in the first six months, we won a large number of blue-chip clients that included Telstra, Westpac, Colgate Palmolive. One year on, we moved to offices in North Sydney.Our growth was made possible by the many partnerships we enjoyed. The several licences we held included the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research, Harris Interactive, the Reputation Institute, and DYG - all of which worked exclusively with AMR across the Australian and New Zealand territories.The collaborative partnerships extended from knowledge transfer and analysis using their IP, to joint ventures like JD Power. Media Metrix and others sent marketing experts to us, and we would participate in team workshops in the US. It was a thrilling time to be learning and introducing new practices into the market and to be demonstrating my commitment to value by partnering with the world’s best.AMR was sold to STW in 2006, who kept it as a profitable business under its umbrella.During my tenure, I was also Chairman of AMSRS NSW, then Chairman of AMSRS National, and the Inaugural President of Council Australian Marketing Services Associations (CAMSA).
