About Brian Forster

Software development and business analytics lead for software development teams. I'm always looking to tackle technical challenges and dive into the details; usually as technical project lead working among development teams to build great software, data analysis and business metric systems. I always like doing the pieces of the project between other roles to keep things running well.I'm currently senior technical program manager at Amazon Diagnostics. I handle a variety of responsibilities including: technical architecture, managing scope with non-technical product managers, building rapid proof-of-concepts, gathering and analyzing a variety of data. I'm often learning new technologies quickly, so over the years I've picked up experience leading/contributing in a wide variety of technologies (many of them now really antiquated). I'm also usually the local Excel expert, which comes in handy surprisingly often.

  • Amazon
    Senior Technical Program Manager
    Amazon Oct 2016 - Present
    New York, Ny
Across a few organizations at Amazon, each time I've been effectively project lead for variety of department initiatives, managing development from plans to completion working across the group to ensure on-time completion. While I focus on keeping the team moving and removing roadblocks for development; any given day could be working on helping define requirements, building consensus on technical architecture, working across departments, defining a schedule, writing a variety of communications, managing QA and (hopefully) successful project releases. I act in a variety of roles, from sole point-person on a project through leading a development groups of up to 10 with cross-organizational dependencies. I'm often acting as the customer voice in technical meetings, then also the technical voice in more business-focused meetings. In each case, I balance the schedule and technical priorities between the project's short and long term plans, manage communication to a variety of audiences (including product and department leads) and focus on clearing obstacles and uncertainties for the team.Currently, I'm TPM of a Data Lake team within Amazon Diagnostics. Our team processes, stores and reports on legally-sensitive data which is hosted in secure AWS zones and only reported via specific, secure, dashboards. I build and maintain the team backlog, balancing known roadmap-projects with ad hoc requests...I also handle our ad hoc request process. Separately, I'm facilitator of a security process with our InfoSec team, communicate outbound to the organization and generally try to keep the team moving efficiently. Also at Amazon, I was previously with a Catalog team designing a quantitative observational analytics engine based on complex item-update data flows, which allowed me to do some quantitative testing as well as contribute to team-architecture decisions. I'm happiest when I'm into the technical details with the dev team, and in both roles that's been a nice plus.
