As Director of Education at CCGS, my primary duty is to create a highly engaging, deeply meaningful, sustainable and growing program of high excellence for a large number of inner-city students, with special emphasis on creating very high achievement for the most dedicated students. Teaching responsibilities include classroom teaching, guitar orchestras, and individual lessons. Other responsibilities include training teachers, creating lesson plans, coordinating with school teachers, co-teaching, creating a guitar borrowing system, creating systems for achievement, creating curricula and other materials, building relationships with students and parents, and leading/ facilitating student performances. Since joining CCGS, I have helped the organization expand its programming to additional schools and established a student performance program. In addition to weekly group classes at public and charter schools throughout the city, I provide individual lessons to motivated students. This program has proven so successful that a particularly talented student who began private lessons with me in November 2016 was one of only two students accepted to Cleveland Institute of Music’s Minority Artist Fellowship program. This fellowship provides free lessons and classes at CIM throughout high school in order to prepare students for acceptance into the best music conservatories in the country. In the past year, students from CCGS programs have performed at Severance Hall, Playhouse Square, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. They have opened concerts for world-renowned artists such as Sharon Isbin, William Kanengiser, and Les Frères Méduses. At CCGS, in addition to teaching, I have organized community-wide concerts, consulted on organization-wide curricular decisions, trained new teachers, developed and maintained relationships with students’ families, and contributed to successful grant applications.
