As the Submarine Training & Systems Centre (STSC) Platform Systems Training Equipment (PSTE) Manager I am responsible to ensure the simulators & training rigs are available to meet the Training Authority - Submarines (TA-SM) requirements.The Platform Systems Training Equipment comprises of a combination of submarine equipment, training simulators and a motion simulator with a total valued of $90,000,000. The PSTE maintenance is conducted using 3 full time employees and sub contractors with a yearly maintenance budget of $1,400,000.

I performed the duties of Senior Instructor (Propulsion) for the COLLINS submarine program.In this position I lead and worked with other training developers, instructors and subject matter experts to ensure the training packages met the complete needs of the student's. The students, ranged from Submarine Commanding Officers to Able Seamen employed in the engine room. Major Responsibilities: Conduct analysis and design courses for the propulsion system operators and maintenance and courses associated with the Collins Class Submarines.Develop competence based training packages for operators and maintenance and courses associated with the Collins Class Submarines.Develop Computer Aided Instruction packages.Conduct simulation, computer aided instruction and, equipment acquaint courses.Evaluate and modify all training courses with a propulsion system perspective.Responsible, for work allocation, of propulsion systems instructors.Other Duties at the STSCTraining Authority Submarines, Propulsion System Subject Matter Expert.Develop the Propulsion Control Reference System and the Land Base Test Facility

I spent just over nine months installing and setting to work diesel engines with Z drives and associated PLC equipment for control and operation, on board vessels under construction. I was also responsible for conducting crew training and familiarisations.

I spent just over ten years with the RAN working mainly on Guided Fast Frigate Ships (FFG's). During my time in the RAN I completed all the associated FFG equipment application courses in the USA. I also worked to, and succeeded in obtaining all the qualifications to carry out the duties of Engineering Officer of the Watch / Day. In my last position in the RAN was as the Propulsion Systems Manager on HMAS Darwin, for the last three years of my RAN service. In that position I was responsible for the propulsion control systems of 2 x LM2500 gas turbines and the driving train (including variable control pitch propeller), along with the auxiliary systems of 4 x 1 MW diesel generators and auxiliary equipment. My secondary position on board Darwin was as the Engineering Training Senior Sailor, responsible for on board assessment of engineering skills.

I spent ten years with the RN, finishing as a Leading Engineering Mechanic (Electrical). In my last position within the RN I was employed, on HMS INVINCIBLE where I was worked on the engine control system (four, Rolls Royce Olympus gas turbines) and auxiliary equipment (eight, 1.5 mega watt generators). During my time on Invincible I was instrumental in the ship completing contractor's sea trial along with commissioning trials, before discharging from the RN in 1981, in order that I could transfer to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
