I help advance opportunity directly linking Kentucky K-12 and higher education through innovation and commercialization, education and workforce development. This model is the foundation for the Dataseam organization.Beginning with a 2003 paper arguing for additional infrastructure and human capital resources to support the needs of Kentucky's Bucks for Brains researchers, Dataseam was formed within the University of Louisville incubator system. Linking this effort with the University of Louisville James Graham Brown Cancer Center, the first DataseamGrid was built in 2004 linking 75 workstations in Caldwell County, my rural wKY hometown. This initial proof of concept and success allowedsubsequent private and public funding, including state and federal competitive grants and legislative appropriation. Dataseam to advance Kentucky-based research, education, and provide technology to underrepresented populations in the Commonwealth.The Dataseam partnership provides a statewide computing grid to the University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center identifying new cancer therapies allowing efficient cost-effective development. Kentucky is more competitive for federal research funding having the DataseamGrid as a key research infrastructure - nearly $165M in economic opportunity for the Commonwealth to date. Building the grid with advanced desktop computing allows participating schools technology not available otherwise and provide curriculum meeting Kentucky's next-generation workforce demands. Schools earn technology through industry-standard certification and training, including US Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeships, upskilling and creating additional participants in Kentucky's IT workforce supporting infrastructure for education and research.Dataseam began in our Kentucky coal fields as an initiative to diversify opportunities and outcomes. Today, Dataseam provides opportunity in 48 of 174 Kentucky schools serving over 200,000 of 638,000 public students. As a Kentuckian from mining family, it has been deeply meaningful to steward this work as a servant leader for the Dataseam organization.
