Brian is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in Cardiomyopathy and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. He manages patients with all types of inherited and acquired cardiomyopathy and is also an expert in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. His research interests focus on improving the treatment of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy at different stages of disease. He designed and conducted the BHF funded TRED-HF trial, was first author of the primary publication in The Lancet and presented the results at the Late Breaking Clinical Trial Sessions at the American Heart Association, 2018. More recently he has received further BHF funding to perform a follow-on trial in patients with recovered DCM (TRED-HF-2) as well as a trial of a novel antioxidant (MitoQ) in patients with persistent DCM, as part of a prestigious BHF Intermediate Fellowship.He completed his undergraduate training at University of Edinburgh and was awarded the Murdoch Brown Silver Medal for Medicine, before moving to London to continue his clinical training at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and St George’s Hospital. He was awarded his PhD in 2018, along with the NHLI Prize for the Best Thesis. He has won national and international young investigator awards for his research from the British Society of Heart Failure, the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association and the American College of Cardiology. He was also awarded a grant from the European Society of Cardiology to complete a part-time MSc in Clinical Trials at the Nuffield Department of Public Health, University of Oxford.He is on the editorial board of the European Heart Journal and Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging and sits on the British Society of Heart Failure Research Committee as well as the Clinical Research Oversight Committee within the Trust. He is an academic tutor for Imperial medical students and module lead on the cardiovascular intercalated BSc programme.
