PL’s serve the SSRP undergraduate fellows for the duration of the program by providing professional development training – through mini-workshops and presentations, facilitating journal clubs, and providing critiques and feedback on their posters, talks, and graduate school application materials. PL’s also serve as mediators between their assigned fellows and research mentors, liaisons between research mentors and the program, and support fellows throughout their summer.

Investigated whether different kinds of human enteroviruses are exiting infected cells via extracellular vesicles with phosphatidylserine-enriched membranes; specifically examined how rotavirus exploited this method to enhance infection efficiency.

Miami

Investigated the effects of the hormone relaxin and its cognate receptor, RXFP1. The signalling of human point-mutant, and recombinant chimeric, receptors were compared to wild type using in vitro cAMP immunoassays.

Greater New York City Area

Studied the interaction between the E. coli Rho terminator protein and Transcription Extension Complex in a reverse-genetics screen. Generated random mutations in the genes "nusG" and "rpoA" to break a lethal, Rho-overexpression mutant phenotype, which indicated an alteration in the Rho-TEC interaction, and screened for changes within the proteins.

Worked in the lab of Dr. Peter Walter, through HHMI-EXROP and the UCSF Summer Research Training Program.Studied the effect of tRNA ligase enzyme in the unfolded protein response (UPR). Specific experiments focused on whether or not supplying a functional copy of the enzyme from a thermophile could rescue mutant yeast from an overload of unfolded proteins.
