My research interests generally relate to age and growth, life history theory, and population dynamics of exploited/imperiled marine fishes. Much of my work focuses on addressing information gaps in data limited species, particularly deep-water sharks. At the species level, I am currently working on describing the age, growth, and maturity of data-limited gulper sharks. More broadly, I use deep learning to predict levels of extinction risk in species in which the data required for traditional assessments isn’t available. Lastly, I am also interested in updating methodology and approaches traditionally used for analyzing elasmobranch life history and population dynamics. Current projects include the use of integral projection models in lieu of traditional discreet life tables and age/size-based matrices and using phylogenetically informed factor and cluster analyses to indirectly describe life history trade-offs in sharks and identify phylogenetically independent relationships of trait evolution. Though much my current research focuses on elasmobranchs, I am also interested in bony fishes and am currently working on two collaborations describing age, growth, and reproduction of two marine catfishes.
