A general stereotype associated with the Civil Engineering profession assumes that consulting firms are equally effective so that the lowest design fee found in a stack of proposals often effortlessly decides the value of a Consultant. The economics of this approach are black and white; however, the situation is much more complicated. Design fees are typically only a small fraction of the actual overall construction budget; yet, the construction cost as designed represents a large portion. The reality is that Civil Engineering Consultants are not equally effective and the real cost of a Consultant is based upon the value they bring to the project. Design fees are only a component of a Consultant’s value. Engineering design often generates multiple solutions; each with different variables and paths to completion. Inefficient designs artificially raise construction cost, while innovative reduce. Our designs deliver innovative solutions that fulfill our client’s needs while addressing cost, constructability, developable space, schedule, and aesthetics utilizing an industry competitive fee structure.
