Main Job Duties:• Performs research and development related to synthesis and purification of organosilicon compounds, salts and additives. Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, and interprets results. Prepares technical reports, summaries, experimental protocols, and quantitative analyses.• Responsible for chemical inventory management, including keeping track of in-house quantities of commonly used reagents and reading SDS and handling/storing chemicals appropriately• Contributes to synthesis development and process improvement.• Conducts characterization of solvents and electrolytes using chemical and instrumental methods (NMR, etc).Key Accomplishments:• Developed a method to characterize electrolyte decomposition using GC and NMR analysis• Enhanced the company’s existing ICP-AES method for anode-side metals dissolution analysis to improve statistical validity and accuracy• Synthesized ~20 (and growing!) novel compounds that the company had identified as critical to IP, commerical/industrial, or fundamental knowledge purposes• Performed validation and method development for in-house GC QC capabilities. Required identification and calibration of >10 identified impurities.• Led installation and operation of a new bomb reactor for high pressure (up to ~200 psi) and high temperature (up to 250 C) chemical synthesis. Trained new users on safe and effective operation.

• Performed laboratory scale syntheses of new Lithium-Ion battery electrolyte components• Assisted in product scale-up processes• Assisted in method development for GC-MS purity standards• Constructed and implemented database for NMR peak identification

• TA for a university-level course in engineering design• Oversaw freshman design projects and filled in technical knowledge gaps

• Developed and executed a DOE to electrochemically characterize potential new electrode active materials for next-generation automotive Lithium Ion Batteries by setting up and running small scale electrochemical cell tests• Communicated results in a weekly oral report to senior research scientists• Learned and implemented 5S, Six Sigma, and Lean methodologies for a clean, safe, and efficient work environment

• Performed quality control experiments of a new surface treatment solution. Experiments included testing turbidity of solution as a function of storage conditions as well as solution efficacy as a function of turbidity.• Cleaned and polished stainless steel samples to prepare for coating and testing
