About Brian Krans

I've worked in print, online, video and audio (podcast and live radio) as a host, reporter, producer, guest, editor, photographer, and technician. I often mix roles. I've covered crime, courts, politics, science, health, education, regulation, corruption, and a mixture of all of it at the city, county, state, and federal level. I've conducted interviews between votes in the U.S. House of Representatives, covered systemic abuse in the Catholic diocese, and slept on the floor of an RV to cover (and join) Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. My recent investigations have included the well-funded, largely overlooked, and under-regulated California school bond market; whistle-blower complaints against the for-profit EMS system in Alameda County; antibiotic-resistant bacteria; and various projects at the the Investigative Reporting Program at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism).Prior to that, I was the Senior Writer at Healthline.com, where I still write. I am also the author of four books: A Constant Suicide, Freeze Tag on the Highway, Shred 'Til You're Dead II, and Assault Rifles & Pedophiles: An American Love Story. In 2014, I completed a 77-day, 26-city tour across the U.S. and Canada by myself (and a fantastic network of rollerbladers) in my truck to promote AR&P and my Healthline antibiotic resistance series. I started writing for newspapers at Winona State University, where their ethics and tenacity shaped my core values and my sense of humor. I'm an '18 UC Berkeley J-school grad who focused on audio and investigative reporting. I was on the health beat for Oakland North and reported on street-level services in the opioid epidemic and The Town's most expensive ballot measure to date: a one-cent per ounce soda tax. I was the IRP's student merit fellow. I'm a Wisconsin native, and former Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa newspaper reporter. I've lived in the Bay Area for nearly a decade. I rent and want to remain in Oakland.
