About Brian Lockhart
Brian Lockhart is a Senior Vice President, ESPN Storytelling Studio at ESPN. He possess expertise in sports, video production, broadcast, television, digital media and 12 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I worked with Brian at two different networks, HBO and the NFL Network and in both situations the man i had the opportunity with was incredibly supportive, fully collaborative and a partner in the creative process to create the best possible work. After working together at HBO, a good amount of time passed before our paths crossed again, but when we reconnected at the NFL Network, it led to one of the best producing experiences of my career. I was one of the producers on the NFL Network series The Season that was led by Brian. The group of producers were incredibly talented and it was an environment where ego could've easily come into play, but that was not the case. Thru Brian's leadership there was a collaborative and very healthy competitive spirit within the group. The mantra sent down from Brian for the pieces each week was "make it great." Now that might seem like an obvious request and that everyone wants the work to be great. But for me, i never quite had heard the request in the same way as it came from Brian. It was a challenge. He was trusting that we understood what that meant. He also knew the group didn't need a lot of talk. Make it great. I know that every time i went out into the field, that mantra flowed thru my head and I pushed myself to make the work as strong as possible. Another quality that came from that process and other times that I have worked with Brian is that his feedback on a project is not based on his personal ego, but rather on the work. That is rare. Brian's focus was the work. How do we tell the story better, how do we adjust, what can we do, how can i help, let's talk it thru. I have worked in television close to 20 years and I can certainly say that the times that i have come across that kind of support both in terms providing creative guidance as well as room to find the story and then creative support as you are going on the journey with a rough cut to final product. Another project Brian and I worked on at the NFL Network was a documentary concept that came out of a pre season brainstorm session that he set up with all the producers, associate producers, writers, show producers, production assistants etc. Brian would run these brainstorm sessions with that same kind of creative collaborative spirit that i mentioned above. The collaborative spirit in rooms like that starts with the person who runs them. Brian set a tone that welcomed ideas from EVERYONE. It was not based on status. It was not based on years in the business. Ideas were welcome, by anyone and everyone. They were thrilling and exciting meetings. And once again they put me in an environment where i felt personally challenged to push myself to find a great idea to present, to want to contribute and to uncover a potential story for the season. Brian is a leader, a collaborator and someone who helps lift those around him up. I've felt lucky to have worked with him over the years."
