Previously, from January 2009 to June 2011, Brian was the Occupational Health Manager – AngloGold Ashanti Corporate Office (Johannesburg). His main responsibilities included:• Reviewing and formulating corporate Occupational Health policy • Developing and maintaining corporate Occupational Health standards and guidelines – revising documents to ensure Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Standards (OHSAS) 18001 compliance• Through audits, ensure consistent application of the OHS systems and practice protocol across all operations• Providing Occupational Health consulting services to operations when requested• Internal reporting to the Executive Committee and the Safety and Health & Sustainable Development Committee of the Board of AngloGold Ashanti Directors.• External reporting on Occupational Health issues• Team member of the Safety Transformation teamDuring this time, Dr. Mathibe was appointed as the legally responsible manager for the Johannesburg Corporate Office building under Section 16(2) of South Africa’s Occupational Health and Safety Act. He also managed the Corporate Office clinic where primary, travel, counseling, wellness and physiotherapy services are offered.Brian also served on the Employment Equity Committee and the Women’s Forum.

As part of a collective, Brian was responsible for occupational health services to all employees and contractors in the region in accordance with South Africa’s Mine Health and Safety Act and AngloGold Ashanti’s Health and Safety policy. Brian believes that all workers should be able to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health and favourable working conditions and that a good occupational health practice should deliver these outcomes. Dr. Mathibe was also part of the company’s occupational health decision making body, the Occupational Health Working Group. Other responsibilities included continuing medical education of the occupational health nurses and the hospital medical officers; and undertaking occupational health audits as required by the Group’s Occupational Health Manager. He initiated a project in which ex mineworkers were traced for the purposes of free benefit medical examinations.

Brian was employed as a Medical Officer at the West Wits Hospital where he took responsibilities for the day to day running of the main surgical ward.

This period saw Dr. Mathibe working at Pretoria Academic Hospital in the Urology department as a Medical Officer.

Brian was a Community Service Medical Officer at the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital complex. He was chosen as a representative for all medical officers, playing a link between management and the doctors.
