linux 2.6, VxWorks, C, MPEG2, OCAP, IEEE1394 Member of Mitsubishi's Advanced Development group.We developed the first production DTV, then enhanced, improved and rewrote TVs for another 12 years. Responsibilities included: - implmenting the first TV with integrated DVR using the 1394 bus. - coordinating with a subcontractor to design and implement protocol stacks on top of 1394 - writing software to demux/remux MPEG-2 transport streams, - finding and fixing stream throughput bottlenecks. Analyzing pathological streams. Analyzing flash filesystem problems.Responsible for architecture and development of platform security features for 3 model years, on 2 SoCs. While there, I: - designed/implemented a secure boot system (crypto tools for signing and verifying software and filesystems during startup). - designed/implemented staged integration of security features during the development process, for production, and for board repair. - Initial design of secure software update incorporating UpdateLogic Inc software and servers. - locking down and testing the kernel. - wrote and defended security design submittals for content partners - Netflix, Vudu, MS PlayReady.Prototyped a tool to decode MPEG-2 data, estimate areas of likely data loss with a neural net, and finally clean-up artifacts of encoding.I've been awarded a number of patents, some quite strange indeed, that address adaptive alignment of optical systems as well as IR control, UI, and other features of high-end televisions.

Assisted the owner in developing/enhancing what was probably the first (and lowest-cost) integrated NTSC DVR board for the film & tv production industry.

Riverside, Ca.

- Partnered with extraordinary designer and thinker, Dave Vann, to develop a game engine and then publish several games on handheld platforms.- Discovered that in that business, the liability of not loving games outweighs the benefit of understanding good software process. Nevertheless, wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Orange County, California Area

- Led the team that maintained and enhanced our flagship product, a multi-user word processing system running on DEC minis and the nascent IBM PC.- Designed and wrote a tool to locate and read hand-written routing numbers on fax cover pages. It brought together feature extraction techniques (from visual processing systems learned at New College,) with contemporary work in auto-pruning neural networks, plus some cool disambiguation stuff that wouldn't be necessary today.- Managed to completely "not get" the coming importance of the internet.

Santa Ana, Ca.

- Hired and led the Applications group, developing software for building automation and energy management in assembly code and Fortran. With a remarkable team of engineers and managers, installed and completed a number of large contracts at campuses around the country. - Investigated sources of vegetarian food, available after midnight in Warner-Robbins, Ga, Chapel Hill, and Colorado Springs.- Ultimately, we turned a $20M liability for our parent company into a $4M one. :)
