I am currently the Lead Database Administrator at the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. I oversee, manage, and support over 200+ terabytes of data originating from instruments onboard spacecraft and satellites throughout our solar system and beyond. Our database environment consists of multiple physical and virtual Solaris/Linux servers hosting four different database platforms (Oracle, Sybase, PostgreSQL, and MySQL). We provide data to various departments within CU, the NASA community, and the public. I work along side our IT department to design, justify, acquire, and build new mission operations and science hardware/storage/database infrastructure. I work with our Science Data Center to develop data pipelines utilizing the cloud, primarily AWS (S3, SQS/SNS, Batch, ECR, ElasticSearch, etc) to both deliver and process atmospheric and space science data. I constantly strive to implement cost-effective and reliable solutions utilizing cutting edge technology that will both support and advance the mission's goals. In 2015 I implemented a new 50+ TB Oracle partitioned database, replicated with Dell Shareplex software, to store science and engineering data captured from the newly launched $1 billion NASA MMS mission (http://mms.gsfc.nasa.gov). We support a variety of other planning/scheduling, mission operations, and science datasets. I also support the lab's various educational and partner projects.I strive to provide a continuous 24/7 environment while implementing near-time replication, online backups, and maintenance operations with minimal impact to project end-users and the science community. I take pride in the services we provide on a daily basis and strive to continuously improve all aspects of our operations while maintaining superior customer service and response time to all data-related and other requests.

I was the sole corporate DBA and in-house database specialist for VTLS (located in Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center and acquired by Innovative Interfaces Inc, June 2014). I advised on all data and database-related issues and held the lead role in performance testing and tuning of all company-created software.I devised, implemented, documented, and managed 24/7 production environments while optimizing database accessibility and eliminating downtime. I performed Oracle database installations, applied patches, and performed upgrades between Oracle versions 9i/10g/11g/12c. I performed data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) activities between various databases and UNIX platforms using Data Pump, SQL*Loader, and other tools.I implemented advanced online backups using Oracle's recovery manager (RMAN) tool. I collaborated with various parties to create, maintain, and enhance high-availability environments and design disaster recovery strategies using advanced features such as Oracle Data Guard, RAC, ASM, clustering, mirroring, and replication.In addition to my role as the company DBA, I also functioned as a database developer reporting to the Director of R&D. I designed, built, and deployed large-scale, enterprise-level OLTP databases used for VTLS software. I wrote PL/SQL code using stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, indexes, and constraints. I solved performance related problems using solutions including index tuning and partitioning. During the Hong Kong Public Library ILS implementation project I spent over 90 days on-site in Hong Kong analyzing and tuning all levels of the technology stack.I participated in code reviews for software developers and wrote unit and migration tests to ensure the quality of released software. I created data models, ERDs, and custom reports with software products including Toad Data Modeler, SQL Developer, Microsoft Access, and SAP Crystal Reports.

I trained and mentored a group of 4-5 peers. I shared technical knowledge and detailed work notes, assigned tasks, created an emergency 24/7 on-call schedule, and advised on individual performance improvement plans for my colleagues as needed.Individually I was responsible for diagnosing all escalated customer-reported issues, technical situations, and developing effective action plans. I maintained a strong focus on meeting strict deadlines and providing exceptional customer service. I acted as a single point of contact for high-profile customers and performed their data migrations, hardware platform changes, and software upgrades.I provided individualized training for peers as well as advanced training and consultation for groups of colleagues and customers. This training focused on various IT related concepts including SAAS, grid architecture, cloud computing, Unix/Linux operating systems, network configurations, software development strategies, hosting options, capacity planning, and database concepts.As a result of my unique skills and qualifications I was assigned to international projects in Australia, Sweden, and Switzerland. During a three-month project in Melbourne, Australia I acted as the Interim Country Manager. I oversaw the day-to-day operations of the VTLS Australia office. I attended trade shows, and was responsible for sales, customer support, and the recruitment of a permanent replacement.

I developed customized scripts and code to fulfill increasingly complex customer requests. I worked with subject matter experts to resolve application issues and bugs. I demonstrated a strong ability to adapt to changing business requirements and understand and utilize functional design documents. Thus, I developed effective customized solutions that provided a superior level of satisfaction to our clients.I designed websites for clients using the Drupal CMS platform customized with PHP, CSS, JavaScript, HTML, and company created Drupal Modules, SOAP-based web services, and RESTful APIs. I also installed, configured, and maintained web-based digital repository software built using Fedora Commons architecture. Working with this software, I gained familiarity with a variety of technical standards such as XML, TEI, EAD, Dublin Core, OAI-PMH, federated searches, and SRU/SRW. I also obtained a more thorough knowledge of additional database software including MySQL, PostgreSQL,and McKOI.I routinely executed performance assessments for customers designed to improve system response and run times in various operating system environments including Linux SUSE, RHEL 3/4/5/6 32/64-bit, Solaris 8/9/10/11 running on SPARC/x86, IBM AIX 5.2/5.3, and HP-UX 11i running on Itanium/PA-RISC.

In my initial role at VTLS, as Technical Analyst I, I worked on various projects with a high degree of independence. I was responsible for analyzing complex server environments and diagnosing software, kernel, network, and other operating system problems. This required a high level of critical thinking and ability to accurately analyze system problems and generate sound solutions.I prioritized large workloads under pressure, working efficiently within time constraints. I consulted with customers concerning the most effective use of ILS, digital repository, and Unix OS software. I provided hotline support to over 500 customer sites in 40 countries via email, phone, on-site visits, workshops, and VTLS Users' Group meetings. I was individually responsible for remotely managing an assigned group of 20-25 customers and proactively monitored, supported, and provided them weekly status reports utilizing Nagios software for IT Infrastructure Monitoring.I collaborated on projects with clients, peers, and management while adhering to strict ISO 9001:2008 guidelines at all times. I prepared system administration, training, and upgrade documentation. I supported high-volume transaction processing applications running on local customer sites, hosted on VTLS servers, and in the cloud.I installed, configured, and supported applications built around the following languages, standards, protocols, and frameworks: PL/SQL, SQL, Java/J2EE, Perl, JSON, XML, REST, SOAP, Spring, Hibernate, HTML, XHTML, SOA, SOLR, Lucene, Tomcat Apache, Wicket, Z39.50, SIP2, SCP, SSH, SFTP, telnet, NCIP, LDAP, multi-tenant applications.
