After 48 years in the upholstery industry, I thought long and hard and decided to start up my own company designing and manufacturing a range of quality leather and fabric sofas, chairs and sofa beds. I started Supreme Upholstery Limited in January 2017, operating out of a unit in Trafford Park Manchester. I have been busy since then getting the factory laid out for production and putting our range of quality products together.My father was an upholsterer and I used to love watching him work and was fascinated by his skill. I began to take a keen interest in upholstery when I left school at fifteen and a half years old, I went straight into work. For the first six months I was making buttons, brushing up other similar jobs, and began an Apprenticeship at sixteen – until I was twenty. I went into design and development, which was fairly young for someone just coming out of an Apprenticeship.My career has spanned 48 years in design and development and I’ve been involved in the upholstery business since leaving school. I’ve been working in production management for a number of years. In all my previous Production Planning roles I’ve laid out the floor plans of different factories to ensure the floor work is right, managing to increase the production levels in each one.I’ve been Production Development Manager at 4 different design companies including Lyndon Designs in Cheltenham. The biggest of these companies being Walker and Homer Group where I travelled round their 9 factories, troubleshooting with design problems etc and working closely with their development teams working out and implementing solutions. In my last job before I opened Supreme Upholstery I was Production Director for 16 ½ years.All this vast experience and industry knowledge is now being brought with me into my own company. This is a great challenge for me, and I am still learning new things all the time but I am delighted to be able to take on this new challenge – bringing quality bespoke furniture, at affordable prices to the general public.
