Professor McNeil has been director of Strathclyde Fermentation Centre since 1994, and has worked extensively with industrial partners in the fermentation and bioprocessing industry, including such leading multi-nationals as GSK, DSM, Roche, Eli Lilly, Invitrogen, and many smaller specialist groups, such as the National Biomanufacturing Centre, Igenza, and Serologicals. In addition, his research has been supported by major instrumentation suppliers, including Applikon, Thermo and Foss who have donated specialist equipment. His research centres round two major related themes, real-time monitoring of bioprocesses using vibrational spectroscopic techniques, and the physiology of cells in fermenter systems, and has attracted significant funding from public sources and industry in both areas. He has published around 90 papers in these areas, 16 critical reviews, 2 books, and given over 100 conference presentations, including numerous invited lectures and seminars at major international biotechnology meetings. He is an Editorial Board member of the journals Biotechnology and Bioengineering, J. Process Engineering, Process Biochemistry, and Biotechnology Letters.
