I was previously an academic neurologist at the University of Cincinnati. While there, I had a variety of patient care, education, and research responsibilities. On the clinical front, I saw epilepsy patients in two busy clinics (one in Cincinnati OH and the other in West Chester OH). I was also director of an expanding autonomic testing lab in Cincinnati. Several weeks each year, I served as the attending in one of our two Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMUs, located in Cincinnati OH and West Chester OH). During those busy weeks, I supervised admissions to the EMU, interpreted the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of patients in the EMU and other hospital units, and performed epilepsy consultations. In between these clinical duties, I provided instruction to medical students, residents, and epilepsy fellows. Such education was provided both on rounds and during formal didactic sessions. I had protected research time, during which I acted as the PI on investigator-initiated studies examining cerebral oximetric changes during seizures and changes in sweat production around seizures. These studies aimed to learn more about the detection of seizures and mechanisms which may underlie sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). I served as a site PI for a case control study of SUDEP in epilepsy centers run by the North American SUDEP Registry (NASR). Finally, I served as the site PI for pharma-sponsored drug trials.
