Brian Paciotti received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Human Ecology from the University of California, Davis. He earned his B.S. with a double major in Natural Resources Management and Anthropology from Colorado State University. More recently Brian completed a master’s degree in health informatics from the University of California, Davis. In the last ten years, Brian has shifted from academic work to an applied career and has focused his work in the area of healthcare informatics and analytics. Brian worked as health informaticist within the Research IT unit at the University of California, Davis. In that role he created databases and performed statistical analyses for a large autism research project. After a few years, Brian was hired as a research scientist at the UC Davis Institute for Population Health Improvement. Brian recently worked for a health analytics company called Optum where he provided analytical consulting services to Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. Brian is now back at UC Davis supporting researchers with data retrieval from the electronic health record system. He is a certified programmer using SAS statistical software and is proficient in other powerful tools such as R, STATA, JMP. Brian is becoming a much better database manager and SQL programmer.Brian is building an exciting career in the area of healthcare analytics by bridging social science, health services research, and health informatics. He believes that data, information, and knowledge from a variety of data sources will promote more efficient and effective ways of providing medical care. When outside the office, Brian enjoys foreign travel, skiing and fly-fishing.

His dissertation used ethnographic methods and experimental economic “games” to understand cooperative behavior among ethnic groups in Tanzania, East Africa. After being accused of being a CIA spy, he left Tanzania and performed quantitative analyses of reported US homicides. With experience conducting homicide research, Brian became a fellow for the National Consortium on Violence Research and published papers related to the impact of culture on interpersonal violence.
