My career at ACE began as the Property and Technical lines manager, responsible for the ongoing development of the line of business. This included property, engineering and construction classes for South Africa reporting into local chief executive and the product head situated in the UK. The designation entailed the setting and agreement of financial objectives and plans, retention and new business development coupled with the leading, management and development of the underwriting team. Midway through my tenure at ACE, my focus was directed to the technical underwriting and portfolio management. This entailed a clear focus on the management and institution of the underwriting practises and interrogation of the portfolio to ensure that we met global standards.Additionally activities included the following:• Reporting – monthly, quarterly and annual reporting using MI tools i.e. Qlikview, Excel • Staff – develop and manage the underwriting staff • Compliance – ensure the team are aware of and comply with group compliance policies and procedures.• Facultative Reinsurance – manage and sign-off all reinsurance placements. • Treaty Reinsurance – develop annual treaty submission, introducing overview and analysis on the profile of the business to assist in the annual treaty renewal negotiations. Review proposed pricing annually, negotiating and agreeing final position. • Actuarial Analysis – conduct regular Accident Year analysis of the property portfolio • Risk Engineering – manage and implement the group needs and standards for risk management with the engineer. • Catastrophe Risk Management • Audit – respond to internal and external process and underwriting audit outcomes• Travel – travel to annual property regional planning• Delegated Authority – second highest capacity within group at AA, providing one with the ability to introduce up to US$ 200 000 000 PML capacity for Property and Terrorism US$ 50 000 000.

Johannesburg

• Underwriting – underwrite individual and portfolio risk through application of global underwriting practises, marketing and developing close relationships with the corporate brokers in particular national brokers, as well as independent brokers requiring assistance on large corporate accounts.• Peer Management – deliver underwriting support on internal basis for South Africa and Kenya as a senior peer member of department assisting the regional manager in leading the department.• Delegated Authority – USD 50 000 000, this could be increased on consultation with branch and/or regional manager to USD 100m.• Premium – individual risk premiums underwritten and accepted ranged between ZAR 100 000 (minimum premium) and ZAR 50 000 000.• Conduct market presentations and training sessions on reinsurance best practisesWhilst at AIG I travelled as the key senior representative participating in regional training and development programs both in New York and London.

Johannesburg

• Develop and lead the local property facultative team, to provide the best possible services for clients under my control and oversee the development of the relationships, products and business with the client for all products being property (corporate and commercial), engineering and marine.• Underwrite individual and portfolio risk through application of global underwriting practises• Deliver underwriting support globally on internal basis as a peer member of specialist team underwriting heavy industry Base Metal Risks or Primary Steel Mills. Final authority on these risks rested with the team who determined the appropriate price and capacity in conjunction with the referring underwriter.• Underwriting Authority – USD 50m, this could be increased on consultation with branch and/or regional manager to USD 100m.• Premium – individual risk premiums underwritten and accepted ranged between ZAR 2 500 (minimum premium) and ZAR 25 000 000.• Conduct market presentations and training sessions on reinsurance best practises in particular Non-Proportional reinsurance. • Conduct and participate in global underwriting audits

Johannesburg

• Surveyor (8 Months) – deliver support as branch surveyor to the Johannesburg branch as well as on nationwide risks in the greater Gauteng region. The principle function entailed the surveying and evaluation of current and prospective risks to determine the quality thereof and to present precise loss expectancies i.e. NLE, PML according to group best practice, as well as present risk management advise. • Senior Named Accounts Underwriter (2 Years) – manage both new and renewal corporate accounts, assigning and managing the work load for the team in conjunction with the manager. This included renewal revisions, new business quotations, reinsurance placements, credit control, issuance of SASRIA, quality control management and staff training. • General Underwriter (1 ½ Years) – underwrite both domestic and commercial accounts for Sandton branch including renewal revisions, new business quotations, reinsurance placements and credit control. Sandton branch was the first composite underwriting team to be setup at the time.• Domestic Underwriter (1 Year) – underwrite domestic (personal lines) policies for City branch including renewal revisions, new business quotations, reinsurance placements and credit control. • Motor Claims Clerk (½ Year) – register and negotiate the settlement of motor claims including third party claims and recoveries in conjunction with legal advisors.
