Growing up, my family was deeply rooted in a small town and ingrained in me the value that human relationships are more important than conforming or getting rich. They showed me that treating everyone with respect and compassion builds community, and I bring this to my work. The essence of community development is building local capacity through relationships, which is how neighborhoods can take control of their futures. Lasting change relies on the interrelationship between the economic, physical, and social fabric of our communities. As a political volunteer I had a front seat to Bernie Sanders’ mayoral administration in Burlington, VT in the 1980s. Learning from the travesties of urban redevelopment from the 1950s-1970s, his administration grounded its community development in creating a more just society through true empowerment of those often left out of the political and economic mainstream. We who helped to revitalize Burlington in that period learned that centering human needs alongside economic and physical development improves everyone’s social and economic well-being. This experience inspired my career path, focused on leveraging public and private investments to empower low-income families, neighborhoods, and communities by building the capacity of residents to meet their needs. Building durable individual, organizational, and community capacity to undertake challenging projects is part of my unique approach to consulting. I use an iterative process steeped in deep listening to understand the client’s goals, values, and vision. I then use my tenacity and pragmatic creativity, informed by financial and regulatory expertise, to help them build strategies based on both the community’s needs and its strengths. This asset-based approach to working with organizations and communities harnesses all of their strengths -- the skills and energy of local residents, the power of local networks and associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions -- to solve current challenges in a way that makes communities stronger and more sustainable long-term.My expertise and my mission is to empower clients to leverage their human as well as financial resources to serve their missions. Communities of all sizes across the country need an experienced, passionate, and creative person to tailor sustainable community development initiatives to their local needs.
