Brian Simonds work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow
Postdoctoral Fellow
- Investigate laser processing of thin film CdTe for photovoltaic use. - Work with and mentor graduate students. - Work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to facilitate work on non-proprietary partnering opportunity.
Research Assistant
Here I worked on novel, silicon based thin films used for photovoltaics. I was coadvised by Prof. P. Craig Taylor and Prof. Richard Ahrenkiel. I studied carrier transport in nanocrystalline silicon, which led to the discovery of an electron transfer mechanism from amorphous silicon to the crystalline fraction. In addition, I prepared and studied silicon quantum dots in a superlattice structure as part of a National Science Foundation fellowship at the University of New South Wales. In particular, I characterized phosphorous doping of these materials with electron paramagnetic resonance.
East Asia And South Pacific Institute Fellow
- Make silicon quantum dot superlattice structures to be used for photovoltaic applications. - Study phosphorous doping of these structures with electron paramagnetic resonance.- Develop a lasting collaboration with UNSW and the Colorado School of Mines.
Research Scientist
I worked in the Quantum Electrical Metrology Division under Dr. Niel Zimmerman. My work supported the larger efforts of establishing current and capacitance standards using single electron tunneling devices. My responsibilities included assessing the frequency dependance of a custom made cryogenic capacitor, maintaining and operating a dilution refrigerator in the milli-Kelvin range, and carrying out measurements on single electron devices.
