•Worked in Dr. Stephen Boppart's Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory with his Neurophotonics Imaging team.•For my project, I utilized different retinal-based opsins (ChR2, ChETA, and Opn4) as optogenetic tools to enable cell-specific control of activity via light stimulation and studied the calcium dynamics of these different opsin in HEK-293 cells. I was able to monitor the cellular activity and biochemical pathways in response to excitation of these light-sensitive transmembrane proteins, I performed functional calcium imaging using video-rate fluorescence microscopy of a green-fluorescent calcium indicator Fluo-4. •Responsible for taking care of and passaging HEK-293, NE4C, and PC12 cells. I also transfected these different cell lines with different opsins. •Responsible for dissecting isolated retina from mice as well as preparing retina cultures for imaging studies
