Eurofins Scientific is an international Life Sciences company which provides analytical testing services to clients across multiple industries. Eurofins is the world leader in Environment, Food and Pharmaceutical Products Testing and that it is also one of the global independent market leaders in certain testing and laboratory services for Agroscience, Genomics, Discovery Pharmacology and for supporting clinical studies. In addition, Eurofins is one of the key emerging players in specialty clinical diagnostic testing in Europe and the USA.

The consolidated ALS Mineral Division provides global coverage and Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) service offerings across the entire Resources Life Cycle from Exploration, though Production & Optimization, to Trade. The position of Group GM reports to the CEO and is responsible for devising, implementing and executing Strategic Imperatives, Financial performance (Growth, Margin, Capital – Asset & Working), internal processes including Business and Staff Development, Compliance, and Culture for all underlying businesses. Global General Managers for each of the global business units (Geochemistry, Metallurgy, Coal, Inspection, and Engineering Services) report to the Group GM. The ALS Minerals Division employed over 5,500 FTE globally at the resources sector cyclic peak, and undertook rationalizations as appropriate as the sector declined (2012 to 2016). The consolidated business operates out of over 150 locations globally across North and South America, Asia, Australia, Europe and Africa.Managing a market leading global resources focussed business through the most significant downturn in sector activity on record required a precise derivation and execution of strategy. Sector activity declined 66% (Hard rock) and over 80% (Coal) during the period 2012 to 2017. Strategy needed to address cost base via rationalization and restraint, and control capex, whilst balancing investment in people, systems and technologies to position the business for the inevitable cyclic recovery. The ALS Minerals Division emerged from sector with significant growth in market share, a clean balance sheet, sector leading margins, retained expertise and at a clear technology advantage over competitors.

In December 2009, ALS completed the acquisitions of Ecowise Australia Pty Ltd, and PearlStreet Limited. Ecowise Australia was integrated into the Australian Environmental Business as a specialist Water Resources Group. PearlStreet was re badged post integration into the newly formed ALS Industrial Division, specialising in providing the Energy, Resources and Infrastructure sectors with testing (NDT, Mechanical, Condition Monitoring), Inspection and Asset Care services. The position of Group GM is responsible for providing strategic direction and financial management and performance of underlying businesses. Regional Divisional GM for each business unit (Environmental Aust/Asia, Industrial, Food/Pharma) report to the Group GM. This consolidated business employs over 1500 staff and operates out of over 50 laboratories and offices.

In April 2008, ALS reverted from a structure delineated by six geographic regions, to one of four globally operated divisions – Mineral, Environmental, Coal, and Tribology. The position of Group General Manager – Australia, Asia, Europe (Environmental Division), is the senior management position across this super region. Reporting to the Group General Manager (GM), are sub regional GMs – one each for Australia, Asia and Europe (AAE). The Group GM role is largely strategic and includes P&L responsibility for the AAE region; sign off of sub regional business plans and budgets; strategy development; trans-regional client management; and capital investment approval. Whilst the sub regions operate autonomously, the responsibility for alignment of strategies and analytical service development as well as resource sharing lies with the Group GM. The AAE Environmental region employs over 1000 staff and operates over 20 laboratories and sales offices.

The position of General Manager (ALS Australian Operations) is the Senior ALS management position in the Australian Region. The position encompasses the management for all business units operating within the Australian Region – 18 functional business units, covering five divisions (Mineral, Environmental, Tribology, Food/Pharmaceutical and coal) and employing over 700 staff. Duties for this position include the development and implementation of strategic and business plans which are aligned with global corporate objectives, directing organisational development and structure, facilitating internal and external communications, sign off on business unit budgets, full regional P&L responsibility, capital approval and operational/expansion/diversification planning.

Appointment to the role of General Manager – Environmental Division (Australia) was made after a corporate decision to regionalize the company structure, thereby splitting Asian and Australian Operations. This role was an extension to the previous (Operations Manager) and was considered the senior role within the Australian Environmental Division – which had grown to be the largest division within the Australian region during the period 2000 – 2005.Position duties included divisional strategic, business and market planning, P&L responsibility, capital recommendations, organisational structure and expansion planning. During this tenure, the division extended divisional operations to include a full service laboratory in Perth, relocation of Melbourne Operations, and the Opening of a services office in Adelaide.
