The consolidated ALS Mineral Division provides global coverage and Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) service offerings across the entire Resources Life Cycle from Exploration, though Production & Optimization, to Trade. The position of Group GM reports to the CEO and is responsible for devising, implementing and executing Strategic Imperatives, Financial performance (Growth, Margin, Capital – Asset & Working), internal processes including Business and Staff Development, Compliance, and Culture for all underlying businesses. Global General Managers for each of the global business units (Geochemistry, Metallurgy, Coal, Inspection, and Engineering Services) report to the Group GM. The ALS Minerals Division employed over 5,500 FTE globally at the resources sector cyclic peak, and undertook rationalizations as appropriate as the sector declined (2012 to 2016). The consolidated business operates out of over 150 locations globally across North and South America, Asia, Australia, Europe and Africa.Managing a market leading global resources focussed business through the most significant downturn in sector activity on record required a precise derivation and execution of strategy. Sector activity declined 66% (Hard rock) and over 80% (Coal) during the period 2012 to 2017. Strategy needed to address cost base via rationalization and restraint, and control capex, whilst balancing investment in people, systems and technologies to position the business for the inevitable cyclic recovery. The ALS Minerals Division emerged from sector with significant growth in market share, a clean balance sheet, sector leading margins, retained expertise and at a clear technology advantage over competitors.
