I have always enjoyed building things. My father would get frustrated with me because I was always tearing apart flashlights to see first how they worked, and second how I could build them into something else. When I received a Congressional nomination to West Point, I knew that I had to earn an engineering degree from one of the oldest and best institutions in our country. What I did not anticipate was how much I enjoyed the act of service and how that would drive me towards a lengthy and fulfilling military career in service to our nation. Serving my country allowed me to work on building two more things—myself and the soldiers placed into my care. The enjoyment of building myself and others led to an incredible career spanning more than two decades; allowing me to gain an MBA at one of the best business schools in the country; serve as an Assistant Professor at West Point; build a new program in Negotiation at the Academy; help build a new military academy in Afghanistan; strengthen and improve the National Police Force in Iraq; build and then deploy with a new combat unit to Afghanistan; re-train a cavalry squadron to perform fundamental reconnaissance and security functions; learn alongside Senator McConnell, Secretary Chao, and their guests Senator Schumer and Justice Gorsuch; and finally serve as the “Mayor of Fort Carson”, building, improving, and leading a community of 120,000 soldiers, Army civilians, retirees, and their family members through the challenges of hailstorms, a housing crisis, and COVID-19. My service continues as I work alongside incredibly humble, talented, and forward-thinking teammates at Colorado Springs Utilities who do the hard work in uncomfortable conditions so that our ratepayers can have the best, most reliable service for the least possible cost. And I still get to build things.
