Software Engineer

Nuclear Electric Plc

I spent the period from July 1989 to July 1990 working with a company called 'Nuclear Electric' as part of my four year sandwich course at Bristol Polytechnic. Nuclear Electric Plc came into being on the 31st March 1990 and arose from the division of the Central Electricity Generating Board into three separate companies, the other two being Power Gen. and National Power. Nuclear Electric produces 20% of England's electricity by controlling the operation of seven operating magnox (magnesium oxide) nuclear power stations and five advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR) stations and are at present constructing a pressurised water reactor (PWR). I was based in the technology division of Nuclear Electric where I worked on a single project for the above period. This project involved the removal of a burst can detection system from Berkeley power station and it's installation into Hinkley B power station. A burst can detection system is a system used for detecting the failure of any reactor fuel cans by monitoring the radioactivity of the coolant gases which flow around these cans. The project involved approximately 80% software and 20% hardware, the software being written in Turbo C and a language called Swepspeed. Swepspeed is a language written by the engineers at Nuclear Electric and therefore unique to Nuclear Electric and is equivalent to an advanced form of BASIC. The hardware side of the project involved the creation of hardware schematics and using a series of different software packages develop the schematic design from the design stage through to circuit analysis and p.c.b. (printed circuit board) design. At the end of the year I had gained considerable experience in the use of industry standard packages used in the creation of designs (CADSTAR and AUTOCAD) and also, being the first person to use the p.c.b. layout package (ORCAD) I became the main trouble shooter for other employees who used the package after me
